LANCASTER COUNTY, THE HOLBROOKS LOVE YOU

so basically .... we hit lancaster county on a sunday.

which was stupid.

but, strasburg!
(strasburg reminded us so much of moscow. it made us more than a little homesick.)

a pro tip from the holbrooks:
don't go to amish country on a sunday.
don't nothing be open.

we did find enough to keep us entertained for a few hours. a couple antique stores,
plenty of whoopie pie, a buggy ride, some SHOOFLY PIE omg,
and even a tour of an amish home.

some photos below from our day with the amish.
and please especially enjoy the photos of me and henny and the "giant" amish man.
we have a mickey and the beanstalk dvd he loves to watch featuring a scary giant,
so it's pretty well ingrained in his head that you are to RUN from the giants.
you do not pose with them, you RUN.

here, i will pose, because i am a dork.
p.s.
the first two and a half minutes of any car ride with henry holbrook will start like this:
and eventually end like this:

  20. You guys were brave enough for the shoofly pie?! It is a molasses pie and even though I grew up in Lancaster I have never acquired a taste for that nastiness! These pics made me homesick! Thank goodness Christmas will be here before we know it!

  25. When I was a junior in high school I made my mom and grandparents take me to Amish Country for spring break. My friends were all going to get drunk at Senor Frogs in Cabo San Lucas and I was like "Oh hell no! I'll be staying at a charming Amish bed and breakfast and shopping for some quilts!" I was a very strange teenager but it was seriously such a good time!!!!

  29. the pic of henry running away from the giant is adorable. and the picture of all three of you in the car... that's my kind of family picture.

  30. I want to go to there.

Also, sometimes I reminisce about your Moscow days, those days had some of my most favorite of your posts. I think Moscow is my dream life, small town, antiques store, good luck dogs, plates on walls. Quaint and beautiful.

I think we'll have to make a trip out that way and do more touring up the east coast to soak in some history. It looks like fun!

  31. Even though it was a Sunday, your Amish country trip looks way more successful than ours ... We were in Missouri and it was sad. Just sad.

  32. This looks like such a good trip, it's so pretty! I've never been to a part of the country that looks like this, but it looks like so much fun!

  33. Heyo! I'm from Lancaster -- basically between Strasburg and Intercourse -- and all of this looks just like home to me (uh...probably because it is, I guess). So glad you enjoyed your visit!

  36. Never been to Pennsylvania Amish Country but growing up in Ohio, I'm familiar with OHIO Amish Country!! The best is the little stands they set up at crossroads. Usually it's me and my mom with the two (always) men selling pies/whoopie pies/fudge/etc. And they never know what to do with us, and I never know what to do with the fact that I just bought a pie, two packs of whoopie pies, and a mini pumpkin for $7. SEVEN DOLLARS!!!

  37. That is exactly how the first two and a half minutes of the car ride with MY little guy starts. But then, it keeps going...and going... stubborn little man. So really, you're very lucky that you get the smile at all! :)

  38. I have always wanted to go to Amish country!! SO jealous.

  39. The photos of you and your family are adorable as always.

There's a really big reason not to love Lancaster County though... It's the puppy mill capital of the US. It's a trade largely dominated by the Amish and animal cruelty runs rampant. Dogs are kept in horrendous conditions and while I'm no activist it's enough to keep me away.

  40. In a non-offensive way, the Amish would probably be offended by you comparison of you being similar to them...

  41. Beautiful pictures! And as a mom of 2 (often emotional) preschoolers--I appreciate that you put in a sad carseat picture :) thanks for honesty!

  42. I really have to tell you that the first picture is master piece (from my point of view). If the car was not there, could be a Hopper's painting. The colors, the way Henry stands, the space... I love love it, congrats!
I live in Paris where there is a big Hopper exhibition at the Grand Palais, and it really makes me think of it.

  43. We just came from Lancaster! So funny! I loved it. We actually went to the Amish Village too.

  46. All your road trip pictures bring me back to my childhood. We lived in Virginia, right outside of DC, and my grandparents were in New York, so we did lots of little weekend road trips in between. Sounds like a fun trip!
