F I V E

i was tagged on instagram a few weeks ago (twice!) for that whole five-things-about-me business. it instantly stressed me out, so i decided to ignore it. but, you know, as you do. . . . here we are, old school style! in a BLOG. take that, instagram!

FIVE. THINGS. TADUHHHHH.

// 1 //
if ever i can't sleep at night i like to mentally rehearse the figure skating routine i made up for myself when i was eleven years old, back when i was fairly certain i had the life of a gold-medal olympic figure skater ahead of me. i choreographed it the summer after kristi yamaguchi took gold, and it is set to the carpenter's christmas portrait oh holy night. there are so many triple salchows in that routine, and i always nail every single one of them. but nude ice skates though, not white. and lots of sparkles.

// 2 //
i can memorize the lyrics to a song, any song, the entire song, on first listen. this is only a slight exaggeration. this skill has come in handy approximately once in my life.

// 3 //
i'm super double jointed in my fingers, but most especially in my pinkies.

// 4 //
here are four things that i've done that i always forget that i've done and that always make me go "ohh yeah! weird!": i lived in south korea when i was in kindergarten, i skipped the 8th grade when i was in, uh, 7th grade, i convinced my orthodontist to take my braces off for senior prom (he put them back on a week later), and i once worked as a live model in the windows of the limited on saturday afternoons at the mall (how could anyone forget THAT?! ;).

// 5 //
i have very small teeth. they match my very small face. not only are my teeth very small, but also i am missing six of them. two molars, and all four of my wisdom teeth. they just never grew in. this is a lovin family hand-me-down, tiny teeth. aren't you jealous. huck and i like to brush our tiny teeth together at night, it's sort of the best part of our funny little bedtime routine. he always laugh-cries when it's time for me to get to his molars and the backs of his front teeth. sort of a, "this is freaking me out but we're having fun still, right mom?" kind of laugh.

p.s. i gave birth to the world's cutest kid ever. but maybe you knew that already? ;)

  2. love this! you look adorable in your blog photo up there on the right hand side. ADORABlE!

  3. I'm from California/Utah (lived in both places equally...I claim both!) and had never heard of removing your braces for a short period of time until I was a nanny in New York. There, it was all the rage for Bar Mitzvah boys and girls to get their braces off just for the day and right back on the next. Everybody did it. I was in awe! And here you are, just getting your braces off for prom. Why didn't I think of that?? (Oh wait...I didn't go to prom. Nonetheless... genius!)

  4. Oooh Natalie! Hahaha. I always forget that my thumb is really double jointed, until I go to take a photo of my holding something for our blog and my thumb looks crazy. Chris and I actually posted ours on our blog too!!

    10 Things you Probably don't know about us

    P.s. My face is big and my nose is big. How unfortunate!

  5. oh, how i dreamed of being a figure skater (nude color skates of course) when i was young! the one time i tried to figure skate, i fell right over, the darn picks. i'm a hockey skater. your hair clip is ADORABLE. seriously. i like this post. xo

  6. #2- you and me both, sista! i'm still waiting for it to come in handy... i keep saying they need to 1) set the scriptures to song and 2) set my college courses to song because let me tell you... i'd OWN those songs... and tests. /hopefully/

    p.s- i may link up tomorrow if i'm feeling particularly "i don't want to clean this house any more" :)

  7. So my husband has small teeth and is missing 6, 4 of which are his wisdom teeth. This is a thing, I guess? It runs in his family, too. You must be our long lost relative...how fun! I think my boy twin got the small teeth gene but my girl seems to have mine. Hard to tell at 19 months, though.

  8. i love your five non instagram things - very entertaining, thanks!

  9. I kept looking at your pictures wondering why your hair was poking up all over, but it's just the pictures/decorations in the background playing tricks on my eyes/mind. Tell me you see it now. It's silly. I have gigantic teeth! Especially my front rabbit chompers!

  10. Oooohkay, I totally got tagged and freaked out too, and haven't done it on instagram, SO. I might take you up on this and blog it out too. p.s. those brushing teeth pictures! Too good!

  13. my figure skating routine was to "Hero" by Mariah Carey, I'm really impressed that you spelled salchow (did I even spell it right, just now?) and SHUT UP I DID THAT AT THE LIMITED IN ARIZONA TOO. ...were they farming out local preteens? I'm pretty sure it was a YW activity? Was that kosher? To farm us out?

  14. haha love that huck laugh cries when you brush his teeth. at least he lets you do it!! im hoping it gets easier....my 16 month old is a total spaz when it comes to brushing her teeth! here are my 5 things! http://charleycheff.blogspot.com/2013/02/five-things.html

  15. Awe, you really did give birth to one of the world's cutest kids! That's funny about the ice skating routine. I was a dancer for several years so normally when I'm stuck in traffic (which is always cause I live in LA) I make up dance routines in my head to songs. They are hands down amazing and the crowd cheers afterwards.

  16. I, too, am a crazy-fast song memoriser. Yuh huh. It's come in handy veeeery often seeing as I've been singing, oh I don't know, ALL MY LIFE (choirs, solo stuff), and I've been a soprano soloist in a chorale the past (almost-)seven years.

    Looooove ice skating. I wanted to play ice hockey when I was ten and eleven (on account of my obsession with The Mighty Ducks movies and Joshua Jackson's Charlie, the Duck captain), and my mother didn't want to hear a bar of it, so she "compromised" and took me for a figure skating lesson. I did okay, could ice skate well since I was a good rollerblader, but I never went back.

    So, you skipped the eighth grade when you were in 7th...so you went straight from 7th grade to freshman year in high school?!

    That's, like, WHOA.

    And yes, Huck totally is the cutest. Along with my super-cute nephew because DUH.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I also can totally memorize a song at first listen, in fact-I can never have heard a song before in my life, and be able to sing almost every word. I credit that to my father who still thinks he's going to reach rock star status any day now...at 60, ya know because old guys are popping out on the top 40s everywhere you look.
    I'm pretty sure if I asked my orthodontist to take off my braces for a week, he'd laugh in my face, and add an even bigger monstrosity to my mouth just for kicks. Luckily, I had them off when I was fifteen.
    And, not that you really need any more validation-but yes, it is official that the boy of yours is the yummiest of them all. I'm not biased in any way, so you can totally trust me on that. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Oh gosh. I have a big mouth. well...kind of. I got all my teeth but I had to have 12 {TWELVE!!!!!!!} Pulled to make room so I wouldn't need braces. Those include my wisdom teeth. Too many teeth...not enough space. I have 2 molars that came in super early and immediately got cavities. They are the only 2 cavities I have and my dentist said they weren't ready to come in so they weren't strong enough. I hate it. If I smile big enough you can see them in pictures. Even if I close my mouth! They are back there all silver and staring at the camera. Bleh.

    ps. i'd love braces. i'm mad at my parents for not getting them fr me when they gave my other 4 sisters braces.

  19. I always thought I was the only person without wisdom teeth :) I hear they are terrible to have.

  23. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your sweater? It's so cool! I've been searching for one like that.

  24. Wow. I never got my wisdom teeth or my twelve year molars either. Are you sure we aren't related? :) also I have the exact same useless talent about memorizing songs. Only it comes in handy when I'm putting my son to sleep at night! I'm especially good at memorizing the Disney sing a longs first try.

  25. I love your Ice Skating routine. I am a pretty ok skater(being Canadian and all) and one day in Jr. high I decided I was going to be a professional figure skater..yeah I was weird and thought I could get good enough? I even made a sculpture in one of my classes to describe myself, of me as a figure skater. Anyway, I love this and you sure do have one of the cutest kids ever! I just see his cute little face and it makes me smile as I am sure it does to everyone else. But I also think my two boys are pretty awesome ;).

    ReplyDelete
  26. He is very cute, but every mom is going to agree to disagree. Ya know?

    ReplyDelete
  27. Wow I would love to be able to listen to a song and know all the lyrics! I can't even remember the lyrics to my favourite songs sometimes!xx

  28. I loved your 5 things, especially the figure skating one, so funny! I also WISH I never got my wisdom teeth, worst week of my life getting them pulled. Although, you missed out on the prime opportunity to live off pudding and milkshakes.

    And since you asked for a link back if we did a "5 things" post, I did one about a week ago, so here's the link!

    I love that you skipped the eight-grade too! When I was homeschooled I just had to jump to the next grade that my brother was at, because my mom said she couldn't teach two kids that were that close, so I just had to catch up/follow along. I always felt a little cool about that.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I used to window model at The Limited, Too also! Because I was 'kewl'. Haha.

    ReplyDelete
  32. FINALLY! someone else missing all 4 wisdom teeth & 2 molars! I just like to say that I evolved a little too far ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Um, OMG to the braces story. WOW. How did you convince him?!

  34. i have a tiny face, and a normal sized nose as well! and since i never get tagged, i needed to do this - here are my five things: http://rhymeswithcrazy.blogspot.com/2013/02/five-things.html

  35. Dude, stop saying you have a big nose - it infuriates the people who have *actual* big noses!

  36. Yep, definitely knew that he was the cutest, because he is!! And you are SO lucky your wisdom teeth never grew in! Getting them out is the worst!!

  38. i was super against this on instagram too, and then i went ahead and did it because i couldn't handle the pressure.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I'm glad you have never had to have your wisdom teeth removed (I hear it's awful). I never got my wisdom teeth either but my dentist has done an x-ray and it turns out that I don't have any! None at all. And that's fine with me. Especially because a friend of mine had 8 wisdom teeth. Two on the bottom and SIX (!!!) on the top. I think he somehow ended up with mine.

  42. My pinkies are double jointed too! It really freaks people out for some reason. (;
    I also have tiny teeth. Every time I go to the dentist's, the hygienists like to remark on that. I even had a dentist tell me I should get veneers!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I can remember songs like that too! haha My Mom used to tell me in the car (where I knew the words to every song that came on..) how I could remember every song I've ever heard but could hardly pull a "B" in math. lol ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. k, since i'm lame and blogless, i'm just gonna do mine here. 1. i've seen every episode of nip/tuck. 2. i've been fascinated/interested/studying film since i was 14. 3. i have an uncanny ability to impersonate singers extremely well. EXTREMELY well. (my husband only tolerates Michael McDonald - it's weird.) 4. i, too, have tiny teeth! and on that note, my nose's origin can be traced back many generations - it's french canadian. (Dad loves to do genealogy) 5. all i've ever wanted in life is to be a wife and mother - baby's due in June!

  47. Haha I love the ice skating bit - when I was a kid my friends and I loveeeeed watching the oylmpics ice skating and we all picked our favorites that we'd pretend to me (I was Nancy Karagan, [take that Tonya Harding] but my friend Debbie was Kristi Yamaguchi haha) and we too made up routines and practiced "ice skating" in our living rooms. I am totally with you on the nude skates, too.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Love this - especially the ice skating routine & the tiny teeth. I have tiny teeth, too, and my dentist always makes fun of them. I think they're pretty proportionate, since I have tiny fingers and feet, too. ;)

  52. The missing teeth thing is passed down to your kids, they can either end up missing adult teeth like you or have extra teeth (!) or really, really small teeth known as 'grain of rice' teeth in french. That's more than enough tooth-facts for one day!

    I stumbled upon your blog a month or two ago and really love it! My husband and I are trying to have a baby (one miscarriage early on in the pregnancy back in October) and I must admit that I'm starting to worry about why it's taking us so long to get pregnant again... your blog posts about your frustrations of getting pregnant really struck a cord in me. We always hear about the girls who get pregnant right away and seldom hear about the ones who have to be patient!! Thank you for being honest!!
