NAT NESTS: MAGNOLIA BAKERY BANANA PUDDING (OH YES!)

i tell anyone who comes to visit the city
that a trip to magnolia bakery is really, really worth it.

not for their cupcakes, no no no no no.
their cupcakes are, sadly, fairly bland.
but for their banana pudding.
holy craaaap.

but here's one better:
i know the recipe.

magnolia bakery banana pudding
ingredients
16 oz can sweetened condensed milk
1 1/2 cups cold water
small box (3.4 oz) of instant vanilla pudding mix
3 cups heavy whipping cream
one box of nilla wafers
4 bananas, sliced

instructions
1. beat sweetened condensed milk and water in a bowl (with a mixer, or by hand if you're tough) for about a minute.
2. add the pudding mix and continue beating for two more minutes.
3. cover and refrigerate for at least four hours, up to overnight.
4. in a large bowl, whip the cream until stiff peaks have formed, then gently fold into chilled pudding mixture until fully combined.
5. in large bowl or dish, layer wafers, bananas, pudding . . . wafers, bananas, pudding . . . wafers, bananas, pudding. like a trifle! not like a rachel green trifle.

(our friends the sheehans whipped up this batch, but let's just pretend it was me. ;)
(it's good on day one, it's killer on day two. by day three, it is straight up heaven.)

hope you're having a fantastic tuesday!

  1. I loved my Magnolia Bakery cupcake on my first visit to NYC back in 2005(ish). Sadly my return visit in 2011 was terrible - rude staff and blergh cupcake (and NO red velvet - WHAT??). I'll be checking out the other two places next year when we return.

  2. I couldn't agree with you more about Magnolia! I never understood why people like their cupcakes! But the pudding is good! Have you tried Molly's Cupcakes? They are the best in the city in my opinion!

  8. If you can believe it, I managed to make this recipe even more sinfully delicious :) I add a package of cream cheese and sub the nilla wafers for chessman shortbread cookies....out of this world!!! In the summer I'll use strawberries instead of bananas and it's always a hit :)

  14. I've been making Magnolia's banana pudding for my family for years! I'm from the south, where banana pudding is religion and this is still the best I've ever made!

  23. I'm going to write more on your final post, but I had to come to this post and copy this recipe into my recipe file in case you do take your archives down. (And now I'm frantically wondering what other recipes I need to save. ???) This banana pudding is divine. I will always think of you when I make it. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe and for sharing so much wisdom as well. :)
