Play Along For The Good Of Your Souls

I am not very good at quoting movie lines, is the sad truth of it. It is not my gift of the spirit.

I am watching You've Got Mail for probably the millionth time and I always misquote it. I love You've Got Mail. Of all the movies in the Universe, I should know this movie by now.  At this point a You've Got Mail viewing is a team effort. I say it first, incorrectly, and then Tom Hanks comes second, correctly. I have every nuance right, every intonation, it's just I slip in an extra "the" or forget some words altogether and it makes me feel sad. I could probably sit myself in a dark room and watch You've Got Mail on my eyelids for all it's ingrained in my brain but still I say "lovely" when Tom Hanks is saying "great." Will I never get this right?

I suppose I am meant to be an enjoyer of the entirely-movie-quote-based-conversation. I suppose I am meant to find consolation in that.

So, won't you please indulge me? Give me your favorite movie quote. I will read your comments and laugh and laugh. I'm really good at enjoying it, after all. That's a talent, right?

I'll start:
"And then one day Sheldon says to me 'You never wear Sunday.' It was all suspicious. Where was Sunday? Where had I left Sunday? And I told him, and he didn't believe me. They don't make Sunday. Because of God."

  2. "I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts and I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me, this has always been enough."
I don't know if it is my favorite, but it just says so much about the meaning of life.

Small confession: i always loved this one line from a wonderfull movie - "I know I have a heart because I feel it breaking."

  3. My Down's Syndrome daughter has offered this
'Follow them size fives!' and I will offer
    'On my mark, unleash hell!'
(both are probably not word perfect!)

  4. Oh Nat ! I'm worse than you! It's truly an amazing gift isn't it? My music lyric Alzheimers is also a bit embaressing...

  5. Feed me, woman!

(Not my all time favourite, but recent favourite... usually I only remember one-worders like "Freeeeedom!")

Oh yes, and does a book/film count? If so,

    Badly done Emma, badly done...

  6. "My heart is and always will be yours" Sense and Sensibility (one of my favourite movies)

    or

"Use these insipid words again and I shall leave the room this instant!"

    or

  7. "Oh and baby fish-mouth is sweeping the nation" and many others from this perfect film.

Anne: He loves me? I can't know why.
Marilla: Because you made Ruby Gillis and Josie Pye and all of those wishy washy young ladies who waltzed by him look like spineless nothings.

And this corker from Muriel's Wedding (not sure if it got a great showing in the states but do yourself a favour and see it - it's gold!)

Rhonda: The truth? I tell the truth too. Nicole's having an affair with Chook. Muriel saw them f******g in the laundry on your wedding day. Stick your drink up your ass, Tania. I'd rather swallow razor blades than drink with you. Oh, by the way, I'm not alone. I'm with Muriel.

Here are some lines from a few of my favorite movies...

"What, you guys can't say one thing? Even the guy that can't think said something. You guys just stand there? Come on. "

"You are a murderer of love!"

    "Oh, get bent, TAXMAN!"

"And there I was killing them softly with my song. Or rather being killed. And not so softly either. "

    One more...

"Are you wearin' a black bra? I love black underwears!"

  21. The only movie I know lines from are:

    As you wish!

Oh my Wesley, what have I done?

Inconcievable. Quit saying that word, I dont think it means what you think it means.

Stop rhyming I mean it! Anybody wanna peanut.

He's not dead...he's only mostly dead.

PS: And I probably messed up those lines too.

my favorite movie quote, and if you read my blog ever, you'll know this one right away, because I've used it before: "The only true currency in this bankrupt world... is what you share with someone else when you're uncool."...if it helps, it was said by the Character "Lester Bangs"

  26. You've Got Mail is one of those movies I watch over and over again too! (I think we've already had this conversation). I love quoting it too, and even though I'd love to give you a quote for you to guess, I have to offer up my favorite from sweet, sweet George.

"This place is a tomb! I'm going to the Nut Shop where it's fuuun!!"

    ReplyDelete
  27. Never seen it, hate online dating. Maybe this movie could be the key to unlocking the mystery, or at least distract me from my depressing self.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I love You've Got Mail! I've watched it twice in the last 2 months.

here is a quote from one of my other fave movies:

    Woman: m..a...double r.....y-e-d!
Man: just as I thought, illiterate.
Woman: whaddya mean illiterate, my mother, and father were married right here at city hall!

    ReplyDelete
  29. "All right then, run, lady, and you keep on running. Buy yourself a bus ticket and disappear. Change your name, dye your hair, get lost - and then maybe, just maybe, you're gonna be safe from me."

Hint: It's from a Paul Newman movie. All my favorite quotes are from Paul Newman movies.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I watch this movie like you watch You've Got Mail. It has so many awesome quotes but this one gets me every time. I hope I got it right. :)

"You must know... surely, you must know it was all for you. You are too generous to trifle with me. I believe you spoke with my aunt last night, and it has taught me to hope as I'd scarcely allowed myself before. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on."

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm a horrid movie quoter...but some of my faves that I tend to shout all the time are...

"I feel the need..the need for speed"

    "I'm practically perfect in everyway"

"Gentleman you can't fight in here. This is the WAR room!"

    and

"I'll have what she is having"

    ReplyDelete
  32. "is that your breathing? because i can't even hear myself think! there's too much going on here, you're asthmatic, you're a robot. and what's with the cape? i can't even hear myself think!"

Haily: Minna, tell the foxy moron I got my GED at fifteen.
    Minna: Joann, Haily says...
Joann: I heard her thank you. And a GED? What's drunk driving got to do with school?

"he said 'to blathe' and we all know blathe means to bluff. so you were playing cards and he cheated!"
    "liar!"
    "stand back witch!"
"i'm not a witch, i'm your wife! but i don't think i want to be that anymore after what you just said!"

    that's all i got for now. :)
my brother and i feed off of each other though and can have an entire conversation in movie quotes. our friends tell us that all we have to do is see a movie once and we can quote the whole thing.

but i still enjoy a good conversation between two people of which i am not one who is speaking only in movie quotes. they are hilarious for sure :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. i totally mistyped the first quote because i was just so excited. so i'll retype it correctly this time:

"is that you're breathing? because I can't even hear myself think! you're asthmatic, you're a robot. and what's with the cape? are we going to the opera? i don't think so!"

    ReplyDelete
  34. MandyPants: I watched that movie twice in the last two days, and all my favorite scenes again last night. So twice and 3/4! I want to die of joy every time I watch it, but my absolute favorite scene is the last. Sends delicious thrills throughout my soul! Makes me want to dive back into the book for the zillionth time. :)

  35. How about a song? Movie song of course.

"Up where they walk. Up where they run. Up where they play all day in the sun. Wondering free. Wish I could be. Part of that world."

Sunday... Underwear. When Harry Met Sally?

  36. "I haven't known you that long but I think there may be something wrong with you."

"Empire Records open til midnight this is Mark." (pause) "Midnight!"

"Nobody drink the beer! The beer has gone bad!"

"If I could find a real life place like Tiffany's then ... then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name!"

"Look at you. You have a baby. In a bar."

    And from TV shows -

"Does he have a motorcycle? Cause if you're gonna throw your life away, he'd better have a motorcycle!"

(laughing uncontrollably) "Wait, Wade, Wait... The Chicken Wings! If they come in and see billions of chicken wings they're gonna know"
    [more laughing]
"...that we were smoking the POT!"

    ReplyDelete
  37. ps - can we do favorite song quotes next?

  38. Okay, I watched a movie last night and this was my favorite line..."Tigers love pepper. They hate cinnamon."

    ReplyDelete
  39. "Anyway, it ain't lying. It's just improving the truth a little bit."

    ReplyDelete
  40. Late to the party! But Rach, that second quote is most definitely Wizard of Oz! That is a beautiful one. I'm not sure about your first . . .

Technogran - NO CLUE! What is it??

Shontelle - Muriel's Wedding is one of my all-time favorites. Toni Collette can do no wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Kristen Lisa - I was just remembering that part of the movie last night, and I said it aloud, and when I said "woof" Barnaby got really excited. Too funny.

Maura - What is that from? Sweater monkeys? I feel like I've seen that movie?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Dang Gina and Jadell, you are so my girls. I love While You Were Sleeping like I love my husband. My favorite is the leaning. He looked like he was . . . Leaning.

Jack + Allie - I've been trying to quote that line from Nacho Libre all month! I've entered the stretchy pants phase of my life for sure. I'll have to print out your comment because I've been saying it horribly wrong all this time. DUH.

Pam - I have a feeling that is from Elf. Am I wrong? I think I am wrong.

HL - NO CLUE! Oh I am so bad at this! But this is so fun!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Chess - that's my favorite part of the movie. "Rent control, 450 a muuuuunth." He's the best part of that movie for sure.

Holbrook - you just quoted every movie and tv show I've ever loved in my LIFE! Especially Empire Records!! Oh man. That settles it. We need to have a movie night complete with Holbrooks Are Sleepers Tees here STAT.

cfoxes and Ashlee - No idea! But I love Cinnamon.

  47. DangGina: my favorite movie of all time: Stranger Than Fiction! Plus "About a Boy"? Sweet.

    Here's some for Natta:

What is the air-speed velocity of a coconut-laded sparrow?

I got cabin fever, it's burning in my brain...

I love my children. Why would I want to push them away from me? (tricky, 'cuz it sounds serious, but it's from a funny movie)

This is hard because I watch a lot of foreign films... do I write the quotes in English or French/Japanese, etc?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh yes, and my most recent post was about movie-watching too! How droll.

p.s. it wasn't as funny as yours.

  49. i was watching YGM the other day while making dinner and subconcsiously saying all the lines right before meg and tom said them. i also play this little game with myself that i have to say the lines before they say them or something horrible will happen, i don't know. i didn't realize my mom was listening and she interrupts my quoting to tell me that i've seen it too many times. not true. you can never have enough YGM.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Hmmm, I'm really bad at picking favorites but this one always makes me crack up: It's not stalking if you lover her.

And that's not my fav movie...just one I saw recently.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Oh and YOU GOT MAIL is a GREAT movie

    ReplyDelete
  52. Char, I know the first one for sure! We used bake a pan of brownies and watch Monty Python around midnight after our last final each semester. The brownies really make that movie.

Brittany, I'm gong to call it YGM from now on. At first I was wondering, what is this YGM she is speaking of?

    Yella, what movie is that?

  53. "MOM!! THE MEATHLOAF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"- Wedding Crashers

    And my favorite:
"You guys might not know this, but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one-man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack... it grew by one. So there... there were two of us in the wolf pack... I was alone first in the pack, and then Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys, I thought, "Wait a second, could it be?" And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together, in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and cocaine. So tonight, I make a toast!" -Alan from the hangover

  54. Westly lovers unite!! : )

"Aaaaasssss yooouuuuu wiiiiiisssshhhhhh!!" *tumbles down a hill*

I also love the classics, "I am not left handed!" and "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."

My boss & I often quote, "I'll most likely kill you in the morning."

(I'm turning off the radio right now & putting that movie in. Thanks for the inspiration, Nat!!)

    ReplyDelete
  55. I too suck at movie quotes but there is one that I can't help myself from saying anytime the movie is brought up.

Me I'm scared of everything, I'm scared of what I saw of what I did and most of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you.

  56. "No one forgets the truth Frank! they just get better at lying."

ahh i'll just tell ya. Revolutionary Road

    ReplyDelete
  57. Mine's also from The Princess Bride, and I love it most because I stumped a stand-up comic with it, and he hadda pay me $50:

Inigo Montoya: Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. Ypu killed my father. Prepare to die.

    Count Rugen: Stop saying that!

    ReplyDelete
  58. A few from my all time favorite:

"...and before you know it, you're singing 'sury with the fringe on top' in from of Ira!"

"I want you to know, I will never want that wagon-wheel coffee table"

"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want to start it right away!"

    ReplyDelete
  59. Nat, I love reading your blog (my heart broke for you when I read your frustrated posting...I walked through it with both of my sisters so I have some understanding of how you feel. Stay strong!) and the fact that you blogged on a You've Got Mail makes you even more delightful. I love Tom Hanks and the movie!

I'm bad at movie lines also, but one of my favorites is "Daisies are the friendliest flowers..." or something like that. I had to paraphrase it :-)

The only ones I can remember completely are, "Nobody puts baby in the corner" and "I carried a watermelon" because I used them so often to distract my mom during the last years of her battle with Lewy Body Dementia. They always made her laugh.

  62. "Drama, drama, drama" and "You can't lose something you never had" are perhaps the two quotes I use most often; they're both from the same movie, by the way.

If you're looking for a fantastically, sarcastically, deliciously quotable movie (and haven't seen it yet) 'The Proposal' is perhaps the best of '09. I highly recommend it if you've not seen it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Here's my current favorite:

"Hey, I have a joke. I am a squirrel and I forgot to store acorns for the winter and now I am dead. It is funny because the squirrel gets dead."

I think Dug must be a lot like Barnaby, even though I haven't met him.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Rach, your first one is from The Notebook. Shoot, i love Nicholas Sparks endlessly, as well as Ryan Gosling's pitchperfect version of Noah. Alright, so here's my quote, it's quite contemporary:

"Girls are taught a lot of stuff growing up: if a guy punches you, he likes you, never try to trim your own bangs, and someday you will meet a wonderful guy and get your very own happy ending. Every movie we see, every story we're told implores us to wait for it: the third act twist, the unexpected declaration of love, the exception tot he rule. But sometimes, we're so focused on finding our happy ending, we don't learn how to read the signs. How to tell the ones who want us from the ones who don't, the ones who will stay and the ones who will leave. And maybe, a happy ending doesn't include a guy, maybe it's you, on your own, picking up the pieces and starting over, freeing yourself up for something better in the future. Maybe the happy ending is just moving on. Or maybe, the happy ending is this: knowing after all the unreturned phone calls and broken hearts, through the blunders and misread signals, through all the pain and embarassment, you never gave up hope."
