MAMA STYLE ON MIGHTY CLOSET

well, so here comes the long, sordid story.

i got my first office job in 2003. a desk, a phone, a chair, i'm sure you can picture it. coincidentally, i started reading blogs in 2003. tale as old as time. office jobs are the bees knees for blog surfing. the first blog i ever read was called mimi smartypants

okay but the second blog i ever read was mighty girl. maggie's blog is what convinced me i should start a blog of my own.

maggie and i wound up at the same dinner party of a mutual friend's this spring, and once i got over the initial "ohmygoshi'vereadyourblogforeverrrriloveyou," i sort of fell in real life love with her. she asked me to do a mighty closet guest post a few weeks later and i said duh, yes.

i also have this friend named rebecca baust who happens to be a crazy talented photographer. she came over the other day and we played dress up in the back alley behind some buildings.

and now we are all caught up.

  1. Gorgeous! I love the ones of the last outfit best, I think. Those heels!

  2. Simple, but cute! I've been loving hats lately, too.

  3. i always assumed you were tall--not sure why i always did.

i wish i wore heels more but i am too lazy but maybe i just haven't found the right pair yet--now that sounds like an excuse to go shoe shopping :)

  4. ha I am skinny fat too, now I am going to tell people that...weigh like 100 lb but my knees and elbows are still chubby and yes short too

  5. Alright, the awesome factor just went up about twenty points with you in those overalls. AND, I'm also extremely short. Five foot and one inch. I live a life of denial in my flats. ;)

  6. Those heels! Astounding. Since I'm tallish, & my husband isn't, & heels always hurt me, I try to never wear heels unless I'm at a funeral or church. But I sorta envy people who wear 'em all the time, they are so elegant.

Love the head wrap. Need to do this one more often to better hide my messy mophead.

  7. Love the dress! How can you walk in those wedges? Wow!

  8. O my these outfits are to die for! Are you sure you don't want to be a fashion blogger I mean my goodness you are one stylish lady! Also I knew I should have bought that dress when I saw it!

  9. Your hair looks especially perfect in these pictures! I must say, you can seamlessly pull off the casual t-shirt/jeans combo as well as a pretty dress. I miss corduroys, but I feel like I'd like look like a kid or a farmer. You look like neither! This mama has style!

  10. looking fly! I'm startin to wear hats more, too, due to all the sun in NYC and my desire to walk this whole city up and down and do it all over again.

  11. Skinny fat? Hahaha! That is a perfect description! Even when I only weigh like 110 lbs, I STILL don't look bony. Ugh, my fatty knees are the bane of my existence! Can they do lipo on knees yet?

  12. I seriously love your style and I love that you did these posts because I was always curious about your style.

As for Skinny fat you explained my best friend to the tee' But it's because she's out of shape. That girl can eat a horse, never needs to exercise a day in her life, and she still wears a size 2 not fair i tell you! but she likes you hates her knees and legs.

  13. Haha loved this post. literally lol-ed.. also, I know a little taste of what you are talking about when you say skinny fat girl. Especially after my daughter was born. I'm super short as well and almost back to my pre-baby weight (yes! only took me over a year, oops), however, my love handles still feel like they are twice as big as before. what the? oh the things we do for children. For some reason, being short always gives people the deception that you are tiny all around, which I guess has it's advantages, lol.. Oh and I just looked at the link to your lovely blue dress and just have to say you wear it WAY better than the model. No joke. Pretty sure it was made for you. :)

This made me laugh - I'm short too (and it took me 18 months to get back to my pre-baby weight due to my love of cake) but yep, nothing is the same with my body, it's all different...but it's all worth it, isn't it!

But the bit I loved is how you said that being short makes people think you're small all round. If I was tall, I would have the BIGGEST bottom in the world but no-one notices!!! Hilarious, isn't it!

And Natalie, you do look lovely.

  14. I have fatty knees, too, yo. Always have and probably always will.

  15. I'm pretty sure nobody can pull off pink overalls like you did!! And what knees?!? I think you make "skinny fat" look pretty darn good!

  16. I'm tall and have never felt comfortable wearing heels and wish I could. Flats 365 days a year is a yawn. Just got to love yourself and embrace what works for you!

  17. Maybe it's a shorty thing? Cause even at 110 (back before the spawn, and the current toaster pastry, mind you) I swear I had the fattest knees. I hate wearing shorts because of them. At my current state they blend well with the rest of me, but those things are so cruel to somebody small.

Ok, spill it, Holbrook. Have you come into a windfall of Kork-ease?!?! That's two pairs I've seen you wear in the last week. Do you have a cheap source or is your TJ Maxx getting all of the good ones? I've been stalking a pair on Zappos for $140 which is about $100 out of my budget. Luckily I found a pair of knock offs at JCP for $14, but I still covet a pair of the real things!

    You're adorable as ever. ;)

My question is: how on earth do you manage to walk around in heels all day? I have flat-ish feet, so that isn't something I've managed to make work yet. Any suggestions? Also, love the hats. It's my goal to make church-lady hats a thing again. Let's make it happen?

  20. Bushy red beards are absolutely my biggest weakness. I especially like them when you think the guy would have a brown beard or even a black beard... my sister and I call those kind of red beards "sneak beards". Just FYI.

  21. I totally understand the skinny fat girl complex. It's funny that I read this because not 15 minutes ago I was looking at my knees in the mirror at work and debating the best ways to make them... less fat. However, I am tiny -- short and thin. So what gives?

  22. Haha, it's so true about only seeing people online!! I totally thought you were tall from seeing photos on your blog. Like at least 5'6", bare minimum. Haha but maybe that's because I assume everyone is probably my size-ish :P I get a lot of people thinking I'm a scrawny giant from photos, since I've got the whole awkward/gangly limb thing going on. When in reality I'm only 5'7" (and the shortest person in my entire family) and I wear a size 10.
Love your style!! You're one hot mama :)

  23. 5'3'', small all over but I too have what I call chelsea bun knees (do you have chelsea buns in the states?). Google a photo and you'll get what I mean.

  24. Ok I'm officially breaking out my white overalls. They may still have a few miles on them.

  25. Ok and BTW...I'm not super short but I have bird bones..and still have bigger legs. Not sure how that is possible. The only thing makes me feel better is knowing that my friends with skinny legs or ankles don't love having them either. I always say " live with big thighs for a week" and I bet they'd trade back.

  26. Can you do a walking/surviving in heels tutorial? Because I don't know how you do it. Honestly.

I would choose Bon Iver for a hospital too. That, and Mumford and Sons. Probably all I need.

    1. Also, yes to the weirdness on online pictures! I thought my friend was my height - 5 feet - only to find out, in person, she is SIX feet!

  27. bon iver is from the town i went to college in! love them. you look gorgeous! i always have the opposite problem of being gigantica so i dream about wearing huge chunky heels all the time without looking eye to eye at the sear's tower. thanks for sharing!

  30. Fat whaaaaa? You have an amazing body!

And ummmm sorry! That actually looks really creepy now that I've written it out. ! I swear that I'm a 23-year-old normal-ish lady who just believes in giving other ladies (well-deserved) compliments and not a disturbing internet body stalker!

  31. You are adorable but I just can't with the overalls. Overalls are for kids, not adults.

  32. agh! i can't get over the cuteness! : ) i like overalls, but have not been brave enough to wear them in years... i may have to try them out again, tho. :D

  33. skinny fat! I haven't heard that term in years. Right after I had my son and I wasn't working out, I was skinny fat. Now I'm just chunky. It's okay, I'm back in my work out groove....almost.

  35. Urgh, I wish I were skinny fat. I am just fat-fat, it is so super sad! I love the overalls though I think you really need to commit to a look like that (like you have, styling it so well) otherwise it can end up looking like a late 1980s mistake. You've totally avoided that fate! x

  36. I LOVE the pink overalls! Adorable!

  37. Just wondering, how tall are you? I'm 5 feet flat - husband is 6'3. Heels are a must for moi. I have a hard time finding anything that doesn't need to be hemmed and I have yet to learn how to hem so I am queen of rolling the bottoms of my pants. Do you have a hard time finding maxi skirts that are short enough? I'm on the hunt for one but they are much much to long for me. Sad day.
