NOW THIS IS A BLOG POST!

so the following is a post about that one time when i walked 150 blocks in one day.

i know! let's not waste any more time getting to it!

it all started because brandon had to work on saturday, and you know how that goes. huck and i sort of scratched our heads at each other like, well? what do you even do on a saturday with no brandon? pretend it's another friday?

so we went and got pizza.

this post is such a masterpiece already!

we sat at our little table in the corner and i blew on henny's slice to cool it down. and then i became aware of a fantastic conversation happening at the table of nine year old boys just behind us...

"a toast to london!" one was saying.
"yes! to london!" said the other one.
then, "cheers!" they both said together.
i imagined giant pizza slices combining in brotherly union and i about died dead.

i handed huck his bit of pizza and stole a little glance behind me. we're talking nerdy boys here. the nerdiest. glasses, gangly limbs, goofy smiles, hair sticking up in places, sticky-outy ears. heartthrob material. they were with their dad. dad had this look on his face like... sort of a cross between trying not to laugh and trying not to roll his eyes and pretending with his whole might that he wasn't paying any attention. i liked it. oh i liked the whole thing!

and oh, they went on!

"mmmm. i really like this flavor combination."

"these are man-sized slices!"

"i know why the spanishes call it football... you kick the BALL with your FOOT!"

and finally:

"i can't even finish this! but someday... (his voice takes on a tone of reverence) someday i'll be able to eat a whooole slice."

i thought to myself... NOW THIS IS A BLOG POST!
you know, as you sometimes do.
(and now, here we are!)

sooooo... it was at this point that i glanced down and saw THIS:

whaaaaat?

obviously the only thing for me to do now was push that stroller as far north as i could possibly go, just to see how far that would be.

i don't know. it seemed like a good idea at the time.

we'd made it about 50 blocks before i got kind of bored with it and we turned around.

it was a little anticlimactic, actually.

by the time we made it home we'd logged a solid 100 blocks together, me and huck and that dang old stroller.

and later that night on our anniversary date, brandon and i added 50 blocks to my total--FOR ALL OF WHICH I WAS IN HEELS.

and so. if there were a graceful way to end this nonsense?
the end.

  1. Gotta love the big dreamers. I am pretty sure my food aspirations were just as obscure. My goal was to one day love brussel sprouts (apparently, a penchant for these little guys was synonymous with adulthood in my mind).

Anyway, that portion was all very "overheard in New York," so thank you!

  2. LOL, the "someday I'm going to be able to eat the whole slice" comment kills me! Way to set the bar for yourself friend.

  13. That's it, Natalie. You simply MUST write a book filled with all these little gems. And I will buy it the day it's released, and tenderly add to my beloved library that continues to grow like a weed, even when I say, 'That's it! No more buying books!' But of course I will HAVE to buy your book. And whenever I something crappy happens, or I'm feeling down and Eeyore-ish, I will pull your book from its shelfmates and read from its pages. And I will feel better. And my world will be made whole again. Please make this dream of mine a reality? Someday?

    Think about it. :)

  20. This last week my friend Katie and I wanted to go to this shop for some new lamps that were on sale. Neither one of us has a car here in Scotland so we packed up my 18 month old and we walked two towns over. Chatting the whole way. We walked over 10 miles! I was sore the next day but it was great fun. We stopped for a sausage roll on the way and my toddler drank a whole bottle of cranberry water in one big gulp. Fantabulous day!

  33. Ha ha. Walking in NYC never fails to bring adventure...to those cool enough to recognize it. Have you ever kicked a pigeon? I've been tempted but have not yet succumbed. It would be a little bit evil, I know. But they're just so gross and pigeony.

  34. Hahaha, that's awesome. I love overhearing little conversations that weren't intended for grown up ears. It reminds me of a time when I was folding laundry and my niece and nephew had no idea I was upstairs:
(they're only 6 months apart, and were 4 years old)

Nephew: Momma lets me drink out of a cup without a lid.
    Niece: No FAIR!
Nephew: I even knocked it over one time and NOTHING SPILLED OUT!!!
    Niece: I--I, I just don't believe you!

Congrats on your 9 years. :)
