AROUND THE CITY // AROUND THE HOUSE

▲ ▲ ▲

we've fallen into a pretty predictable routine this winter, and i have to say i really love it. a good routine just makes me really happy, that's all there is to it.

our winter routine starts with slow mornings. we take our time getting ready and send daddy off to work with kisses, and then in the afternoons we book it. we crawl all over our frozen city in a millions layers, running errands, hitting playschool and all of hen's toddler social activities, usually stopping for lunch, only coming home when the setting sun forces us in.

then it's dinner and laundry and emails and baths, and sometimes i like to wear my work out clothes while loading the dishwasher just in case tonight is the night i finally make it to the treadmill in the basement.

i just think it's great.

after running around the city all afternoon, our quiet nights at home feel sweet and rewarding. we take off our shoes (aaaaaand our pants) restock the cabinets of their dishes and tidy the house, and set the scene for tomorrow when we'll do it all over again.

(thank you to albion fit for sending me some motivational work out gear.
i think it'll help the cause!)

  1. I love the simplicity of days like those...and chipotle. And I'm just on my way to read about the cabbage, but I remember those days and you know what, my daughter loves when I tell her the story of the cabbage...on my boobles. It stays sweet in the most unexpected of ways.

    Cheers!

  2. Routine is the best. I am always remarkably happier and less stressed when in a solid routine. Creature of habit.

  4. I love those sorts of days. My older one has been on break and we've been soaking up the first three quarters of our day in pajamas. After lunch and the afternoon passes he notices the sun starting to fade and usually gets emotional and angry and says something like,"I just don't know where the day has gone!@$!@" (in a sqeaky 13 year old girl voice).

  5. So, your photos are looking SMASHING, sistah friend!

And I love the haziness of the first one.

Last night I spent about 20mins hemming and hawing about whether I would skip rope in my lounge room. And then I didn't 'cause, DUH, I'm lazy. BUT! Tonight I will, oh yes I will!

    Also?

I'm sure I've said it before, but your beautiful writing gives me the warm fuzzies. Ahhh!

  9. Ahhh this is so similar to our NYC routine! I just sat down to read this after getting in from running around the city today. Bath and bedtime is done and I'm in my PJs and YES, we did Chipotle for the 2nd time in a week today (turns out my 2 1/2 year old LOVES guac) and NO, I don't hang my head in shame! Having a family in NYC can be so trying sometimes, but it's more fun than not =)

  13. I just have this visual of you with half a cabbage on each boob now! Cabbage bra! Ha ha, but really, does eating cabbage help with the weaning pains? I hope those pass soon, sounds absolutely miserable :(

  14. I loved your nursing/weaning post! I am nursing my 15 month old and am about to start clomid next month. When asked by my doctor if I was planning on weaning in the next month I gave an emphatic NO. I am shooting for a full two years...pending my son weaning himself. I fully understand your emotional connection to nursing and your son. I love it and I feel you post fully put my feelings into words. You are so talented. Keep writing!

  15. I love when they get to the age where they dig routines. probably because I thrive with routine too! sounds like a good day, and chipotle, and no-pants time are never bad ideas :)

  16. I never got to comment yesterday but I loved the post from start to finish. I loved the photos and the memories your words brought back. I didn't like nursing very much but I loved the moments with my baby and I remembered them all yesterday! Thanks.

  17. HAHA I'm totally feeling these pictures; it always happens that I hand the camera to my husband like, "Take this candid photo of me!" but he apparently has no clue how to focus the lens. Serious, my iPhoto must have 1000 pictures of the crystal-clear background behind my totally fuzzy head.

  21. oh my goodness - the little wail of brown rice, haha! you have to go today!

i, too, like a good routine. particularly when within the routine you change (errands you run, where you have lunch, walks you go on) but the pattern stays the same. enjoy your chipotle today!

  22. i don't know if you even need that gosh-danged treadmill for walking on with all the hustling you do around that city of yours!

  23. Haha...I think I'm going to start wailing "brooowwn riiiiice" when I can't have it now too!

  25. Sounds like a lovely routine. I am a routine oriented person. It just makes things predictable...you know?

  26. I miss walking around in the streets of NYC so much more than I can tell. I spend 80% of my time indoors, working. It was killing me slowly... So my New Year's resolution was to spend more time outdoors - walk around with my lovely camera, taking photos of everything and anything in the beautiful NYC once more. How I miss it.

Can't wait for the summer! Oh, Central Park...

  29. Dude, your work-out clothes look like my regular, going out clothes! Doesn't matter if you make it to the treadmill when you're hauling a toddler all over town. Huck is your workout!

I can not wait for the long evenings to head our way so we can have...wait for it...picnic suppers in the park!! Oh, it feels luxurious just saying picnic supper.

  30. I love Hucks baseball shirt! And this makes me miss walking around New York when I lived there. There is always a reason to be outside in New York and I love that. And your evenings sound so cozy.

  31. Sometimes I get discouraged when I feel like my life is the same cycle day over day over day. Of course there is newness in each day, but sometimes I get discouraged by what I feel like is the monotony of routine. This post totally flipped my perspective around. Routine can be comforting, and intentional, and lovely! Routine can give us the structure to live each day as fully as possible! Thanks for sharing your warm perceptive on your winter routine...it's encouraging to me!

And also, when I go shopping from here on out I'm going to start asking myself, "what would natalie wear?"

  35. I just went to Chipotle for the first time yesterday, and let me just tell you: I understand why people have to set boundaries for themselves with that place!
    Beautiful photos :)

  36. I do the same thing with working out... I put on yoga pants thinking perhaps it'll be the motivation I need to work out. I don't think that's ever been enough to motivate me though, ha.

  39. routine is definitely important, but it's so difficult to find that rhythm!

  40. Alright. I just keep reading and while I don't normally leave comments, I am today! Clearly. And I had to commiserate about staying away from "brown riiiiiiice!"/Chipotle. Because while you're doing it because you feel like you go there too much, I've been staying away purely because the closest one was about an hour away [gasp!]. And then they installed one in our local mall [not the greatest of locations, but I really can't complain] and my husband and I went and--AAAAH!--the next day I broke out in hives. If I'm allergic to Chipotle, so help me God, I will fall into some sort of a weird, fast-"Mexican"-food obsessed depression. Boo.

  41. Wow! Your city looks phenomenal! Here in Belgium is the first time ever that we've lived in a city. We've always lived in the suburbs at least 8 kilometers (4.97 miles) outside the city center. I'm finding it amazing!
Isn't packing the dishwasher considered a workout in some cultures?
