BITS OF MOSTLY NOTHING


hello from the holbrook house! natalie reporting! 

not much over here. the days are finally starting to blur together again into a steady rhythm and for that i am grateful. january was such a jerk. january you have been demoted!

brandon works and comes home, huck is all big boy with a heart of gold, and i've been loving spending my days with him. he makes a real fun side kick, not to mention a good sugar snack when you need a quick hit.

i've slowly been making my way through on the road. i picked it up at the airport in salt lake after the new year and it has taken me forever to get through, just because i keep rereading whole paragraphs over and over and then kind of sitting in them in a very nerdy way. i keep getting caught up in the words of the thing. those worrrrds! they keep rolling around in my head, they're such perfect words.

the other day while i was putting away the laundry, huck waltzed into the bedroom and reclined against the bed with his arms behind his head. he sort of crossed and uncrossed his legs while i replaced messy stacks of clothes with neat stacks of clothes, and then he stood up and very loudly requested some chocolate milk. he's at this stage where the minute he wants something it is CODE RED. he asks for things the way you might ask for things the on fifth or sixth time you've ask for things. THIS IS URGENT. COME ON MOM. which i find kind of funny. i've started answering with my arms in the air, OKAYYYYY! which makes him giggle. oh, two.

  1. Ughhh the stroller sleeping toddler you and me both O_o Mine has done it two days in a row and I feel awful but she looks so peaceful. I'm ready to roll right into spring (no pun intended with the stroller!).

  3. I can't believe how much he's grown!! My little one napped for four hours in the late afternoon so we're kinda screwed but it's only going on 10pm so the night is young :/ Hope Huck passes out soon!

  6. You know what's funny? Reading On the Road as a 21 year old completely shattered my ideas of family and stability. I felt so sad for the woman an child in the book. The restless husband who can't stop driving back and forth across the US. His constant longing for something, running from something, searching for something and total inability to be present and love his wife and child. I found it so terribly depressing. But the prose is very poetic and beautiful. And the imagery is stellar. Just one of those books, you know? xo

  13. i've been meaning to read kerouac, but ever since i read "the electric kool-aid acid test", and realized what a wackadoo he and his groupies were, i've been holding off until i can read it with fresh eyes...because i know i'll love the writing, if not the story.

    I have a hard time sitting down and just being still enough to read for very long.
    Needless to say, that is definitely one of my goals for this year. :)

    I thought it only happened to me that I'll get stuck on certain sentences in a classic and then I'll be like, "Wait, what? I haven't been paying attention? What the hell is happening?!"

    on the road is fantastic. if you're super digging kerouac, try dharma bums next - it instantly replaced on the road as my favorite.

  24. Funny... I always think of your writing as similar in a way to Kerouac! I love On the Road. Especially when they are running out of gas and coast down the mountain. So much fun.

    Now I must reread On the Road super soon. My favorite Kerouac quote ever: "I see workers in a dream rushing around carrying staircases, bringing walls, leveling emptiness, worried lest God might think them lazy, and all he wants them to do is rest and be kind."

  26. I always found beat literature and poetry interesting, but I take it for what it is. I am not sure it is as deep as some people think it to be, but that is just me.

  30. On The Road is a great book, but you are definitely right about having to read it more than once before you'll truly perceive all of it.
