LITTLE BOYS IN NYC + THE BUSINESS OF MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE

this is my theory in the making: it's gotta be pretty dang rad to be a two-year-old boy. talk about a decent way to live.

you get to wake up when you feel like it, watch any mickey mouse cartoon your fingers can find on the ipad while you eat your morning yogurt, you receive excessive praise for using the potty effectively, and once you're dressed and strapped into your stroller (carrying whatever assortment of toy cars and planes and space rangers you deem acceptable for the day), you get to go outside where the world is positively filled with all of your favorite things. trucks, airplanes, helicopters, taxi cabs, subway trains, all the street pretzels and hotdogs you could ever eat at two dollars a pop, playgrounds everywhere . . . paradise! this world is a little boy's paradise!

we took the kids to one of the local fire departments this morning for a play school field trip and huck's little boy mind was blown. wide. open. his eyes nearly bugged out of his face. he kept saying "wow, cool!" as he ran from one end of the engine to the other, touching every shiny red inch of the thing and only stopping to peer intently into the deep black of all the firefighter's boots. "cool, mom! wow!!"

tangential aside: whoever thought to teach huck to say "wow, cool!" was clearly thinking straight. the level of cuteness in there today was straight up fatal.

the firemen up in our neck of the upper west side are great. they always smile and wave at huck as they ride past us on the street. the other day we were walking home from the grocery store when a fire truck pulled up onto the curb in front of us. five firemen hopped out with axes and raced into the building next to us, but first, one stopped dead in his tracks and gave huck a little salute. huck must have grown three inches right there on the spot of little boy pride.

new york city is a theme park for little boys. just ask my husband. there's this new building under construction in the area, and every time we walk past it he likes to tell me just how many floors they've gotten up to that day, and the excitement in his face, he is such a nerd.

"fifty one floors today! do you think they'll make it to fifty-two?!"

oh, boys.

a few fuzzy photos from our morning below, and a giant thank you to FDNY engine 40 for being so full of rad. it's my job as the general of this army of silly boys to make as many of these little boy dreams come true while i'm in charge of them, so thanks for helping me check off "sit in a fire truck" today. (and especially thank you to my friend marisa for making it happen!)

my trench coat was a gift from eddie bauer.

  13. such sweet photos! i am cherishing every moment of my little girl being obsessed with "choo-choos", trucks, and tons of dirt and puddles wherever we go. i secretly love that she isn't yet into girly stuff, because these things really are so much fun. i think fire engines may be at the top of the fun meter.

plus, fire-fighters are really sexy (i am married to one - i can say that!)

  21. I also want to thank those Firefighters too! Huck's face!!!! Huck's FACE!!! HUCKS FACE!! Lit up like a glow-worm :)

My Uncle Steve is the Chief Firefighter in charge of those goofball guys down in Houston, Tx precinct and let me tell you those guys adore when the kiddos visit!! It's one of the few perks of the job. I remember my little brothers face lighting up just like that at the sight of a firetruck, or bulldozer, or airplane, or heaven forbid we see an eighteen wheeler (it might honk for us!!). Boys are the MOST and so easy :)

And last but not least... Kate THANK YOU for that heavenly trench! Nat you look like you're ready to rock the runway! But my goodness every portrait you have posted you just look stellar :)

One day Huck will look back on this corner of the internet and think "WHOA! My Mom .. She always hit it out of the ballpark"!!

  22. Had my mind on Kate Spade! Meant to thank Eddie... gorgeous trench nonetheless :)

I love that play groups still exist! I was fortunate to live in OH where my mom put us in "Safety City." Complete with red, green and yellow classes and seat-belted big wheels for all on a mini street covered playground! It was unreal and people don't believe me when I tell them about it today! When we moved to NM, my ma started play groups. My poor younger sibs didn't get the Safety City luxury.

  31. Adorable! My moms' group does meet-ups like this but for girls to see positive role models in firefighter and police officer roles. My 2 1/2 year old had quite the meltdown when it was time to get out of the driver's seat but it was oh so cute regardless! I'm looking forward to visiting the local police precinct next week with our group =)

  34. oh my word. that's pretty darn cute. i was recently thinking the same thing about being a toddler - waking and sleeping whenever you want, being praised for such simple things, someone having to tolerate your crazy, eating what you want (kind of)...i mean. it's really something.
