WE JUMP... THE ELEVATOR THINKS IT'S EMPTY... AND IT OPENS!

so, the following is a true story.

so, the other day we got trapped in an elevator on the subway on our way down to williamsburg. we were going to visit a friend, we were stuck for forty-five minutes, it was quite the caper. even though i DID remember to say "rabbit rabbit" that morning! those of you who follow me on twitter loved my terribly exciting live tweeting of the episode. i am sure.

in other news, i spent an hour surfing apartment listings online last night, which is what i usually do when i have writer's block, which is what led me to attend a very depressing "3 bedroom" apartment open house up on 80th street today, except it wasn't a three bedroom so much as a very long hallway wherein one could stash three queen sized mattresses in a row, separated by shower curtains. but i digress.

there was a lady trapped with us in the elevator, she was wearing a purple snowsuit. she was very nice. together we rode that elevator up and down, uuuup and dowwwwwn, and those doors, i tell you, never once did they open, even though i willed them to with my eyeballs. they finally called the elevator company and then two very nice dudes wrenched the doors apart for us and then freedom! we were freed!

but on the plus side! i got to fulfill a lifelong dream of hitting the elevator alarm button. i've always wondered what that would feel like and now i know. the alarm bells echo through the platform in a rather nice way. thankfully the elevator did not smell like pee! what are the odds you'd get yourself stuck in a freshly cleaned elevator? hash tag tender mercy.

all of this to say . . . if you ask me, williamsburg looks a lot like portland.

incidentally, i really want to start a "moms of williamsburg" tumblr. the people-watching over there is subliiiiiime.

other things completely unrelated to this post entirely:

huck was invited to martha stewart's "take your kid to work day" (even though neither of his parents officially work there). he makes a cute little guest appearance in the video they made HERE. and he's adorable, so there.

i get a lot of questions about my pink overalls from ASOS (which have long since sold out) and i noticed yesterday that ASOS has a very similar pair of pink overalls happening right now. you can get them HERE! public service announcement!

this post has been all over the place. the end.

  1. Uurgh apartment showings suck. Recently found one directly across the road from where we are living and need to leave (it has been sold, we weren't evicted!). It was disgusting. The kitchen tiles were held up by duct tape so you can imagine the state of the rest of it. The agent kept spruiking the fact that it had new carpet. It made me wonder if the old carpet rendered it practically condemnable. Totally disheartening. Then we found out our downstairs neighbour was moving. The apartment gods have shined glory upon us!

    Good luck!

  3. "[...] telling me we were going to be stuck in there for days, which . . . i mean at one point i started to believe her."

    Bwahahahahah.

    Loved this line.

I mean, I loved the entire POST, to be sure, but there was smthg about this line that just made me chortle.

So awesome that this particular subway elevator didn't reek of pee. (Bleargh!)

Also? Please create that Tumblr 'cause I'd scroll the shiz out of it. Trust. (And Williamsburg is pretty.)

  5. Haha! I guess the best part of this story is being stuck in the clean elevator! But I'm not surprised - you always attract adventure and it just follows you around!

  9. You could literally tell a story about sleeping and it would not only be entertaining, it would be hilarious! I'm sorry about your debacle, but what a day to remember! The Adventures of Huck and Natalie continue. I love it.

  11. I'm always worried I will get stuck in the elevator when I have to pee or my toddler has to pee/poo and I don't have an extra diaper. Or wait...that we get stuck in a snow storm traffic jam for 18 hrs {again} and I don't have any food...and I'm 8 months pregnant. That really happened and I do have a fear of it happening again!

  20. At my college the elevators had overly large emergency buttons, on the side walls of all places, that you would easily knock into with your backpack if you weren't careful haha. Love your writing as always Natalie, thanks for brightening my day once again :)

  28. Natalie, too bad Williamsburg does look just like Portland (and not just in the hip way). I'm from Portland and that picture of the Brooklyn bridge looks like the waterfront!

  30. Haha, I love this. I have yet to get stuck in an elevator but I have had ours do that terrible free fall for 2 seconds that felt like an eternity - I nearly pressed the alarm for that before I realized it was already over.

  31. MAST BROTHERS!! My parents were just here visiting and literally the only souvenirs they took home (besides memories.. awwwww) was $60 in chocolate from there and a foam statue of liberty crown.

  32. Oh also, sorry for double posting, but right after I hit send I remembered... the only time I've ever been stuck in an elevator was my first year at EFY and all the girls in our group crammed into the elevator to go downstairs, someone remembered she had forgotten her scriptures and instead of letting everyone else out, we all stayed in the elevator. It started to go up and in between floor one and two, lurched to a stop. Turns out 14 teenage girls was just a bit too heavy for it...
