AND SNIFFLY SUNDAY WALKS TOO

the holbrooks are a mess of seasonal allergies and change-in-the-weather sniffles these days. oh brother. and it seems like huck's runny nose has figured out how to come and go based on the situation. for instance, on a saturday afternoon he was dry as a bone ,but five minutes into church and he looks like a teeming cesspool of pestilence, and the last thing i'm going to do is keep my "looks sick" kid at church in case he really is sick, because then i'd have to forfeit my "keep your sick kids home!" moral high ground. moral high ground is so hard to come by these days. fiscal cliffs!

i think huck's runny nose is conspiring to make us look bad, is what.

so sunday morning found us in our usual routine, where i'm always running 15 minutes late so the boys go on ahead of me and save me a spot, when brandon texted to tell me that huck's nose had started it's usual theatrics once they'd settled in, so they were coming home. i was mid brushing my hair but managed to crawl back in bed before i'd even finished tapping out "sounds good" in response.

four hours and a huge pan of rice krispy treats later and huck was all healthy as a horse and our cabin fever had set in, so we went out for a walk.

and congratulations, you have just sat through two paragraphs and two sentences all about henry's runny nose. yeahhhhh.

but the weather was just perfect and the leaves were actually swirling. all around! it was pretty ideal.

good. our failing health and the weather. now we've about covered it.

sooo, i instagrammed this one and it made it to the popular page, so life goal achieved.
i'd always wondered what that would feel like and it turns out it feels just like deleting a million spam comments would feel.
i'm fairly convinced that most of the 6,000 new followers it got me are mostly robots.
(you read that right. six thousand. whaaaaaat?)
but in case you want to follow and aren't a robot, my instagram account is @natthefatrat.
(i'm pretty sure the fuss will die down soon... right?)

the upper west is in FULL FALL REGALIA.
always a pleasure to see it. thanks, central park.

  1. I think Huck's runny nose was probably being so sneaky in order to get you some pretty amazing pictures. Popular Instagram page well deserved, I say!

    1. I was going to say the same thing, my first kid's nose never stopped running, sick or not. I'd have to cut ties with society with that rule. {Although, I've never particularly enjoyed church, so there is my excuse for the last three years!} but seriously, a runny nose alone is not reason enough to stay home (as per the AAP. and if the kid is contagious, the bug was being passed around long before the snot started running).

  3. "and moral high ground is so hard to come by these days. we're in a recession, after all! fiscal cliffs!"--my favorite.
    Hope y'all's sniffles leave soon.

  4. First of all, I love Huck's pants. I should take style notes from that kid.

Second, I was rereading some of your old blog posts (because that's totally normal and I love finding new gems or things to relate to) and I read your posts right before leaving NYC for Moscow. You said something about how sad you were that you wouldn't get to be a city mom with a city kid, and I thought, "Look at her now! Dreams do come true!!"

    So congrats :)

  5. no matter what you write I am enthralled to the very last word! haha, I sort of laughed at myself for reading about your baby's sniffles, but it's not like I wouldn't not read your post? that is why you are my favorite! these NY photos are soooo beautiful. I desperately need to see the city in person. and congrats on the robot followers ;) oh and i want your hat. yes.

  8. Cutest picture ever. AND!! Can I just say that I love you so very much for keeping your sick kid home from church? I am 14 years into motherhood and so holding that moral high-ground with you my friend. It gets a bit lonely up here though. I don't even let my kid (19 months old) go to nursery because of the number of people who think that keeping sick kids home is for crazy germaphobic namby pambies. Well..um...yeah..IT IS!!! And hello, I am a crazy, germaphobic namby pamby so keep your feverish snotty kid home, please and thanks.I am not afraid of germs in the sense that I don't think they will kill my kid, I am afraid of them for the misery they bring upon our home. I'm not sure why everyone else is so happy to spread germs back and forth but I know for me that when my kid is sick MY LIFE AS I KNOW IT IS OVER. I don't sleep, I don't eat, I do nothing but hold and fret over that miserable whiny bundle of snot for a good week and it not fun for any of us. And I have five kids so it's not like this is my first rodeo. I am also loving you for (amongst many other reasons..yay Mormon Democrat, ex-Moscow-ite ;) that your illnesses seem to strike on Sundays. This happens to us pretty routinely and I feel torn between guilt (missing church..again) and gratitude (husband home to help, can sleep in). Love your photos. I live in NYC vicariously through them, so thanks for that.

  19. Instagram robots are SO evil. I learned the hard way to never use a hashtag with the word "coffee" in it. So many spam comments about getting a free doo-dad at Starbucks. What a pain!

Does Huck have Hayfever? Such a pain.

  20. I already follow you on Instagram and saw the PARAGRAPHS the robots were leaving you...it was nuts. I didn't know people had to delete them, I always thought they just disappeared. How tedious. :(

  21. I have no kids, but as a former nursery teacher I applaud your no-sick kids at church stance. The whole time I had that calling, all it took was one runny nose and I knew to expect to catch some sort of bug. I always wished I could post a sign on the door or something..."No sick kids allowed!" But if there is ever a low ground to stand on, it is parenting advice when you are sans children.

  23. I'm actually surprised you haven't made it to the popular page before, what with all your awesomeness and things. But, congrats, that's super exciting even if spam-filled.

Also: good work with the rice krispie treats! YUM!

  24. Why do I always want to watch "You've Got Mail" after catching up on your blog??

  25. ooh i love these photos. well, except the silly man texting when he's got all of those dogs who would probably enjoy his attention. mister huck is the cutest of cuteness. (and to the poster above: ME TOO! only it happens when i walk around the uws, too. which is often. which means lots and lots of viewings ;)

  26. I know this may sound immoral, but staying home "sick" from Church ever so often can be just as thrilling as when you were little and missed school on a sick day. That feeling just never gets old :)

  31. If the runny nose comes on that fast, there's an alergen that he's highly sensitive to at the church. Is the church cleaned the day before the church service? Maybe dust is stirred up after vaccuuming the carpet. Find out what cleaning solution is used to mop floors and clean bathrooms. Could be an air freshener. Maybe a plant is the problem.
You are right to get him away from the irritant. Sustained exposure to the allergy source will make the symtoms worse and truly make him sick.
