FAKE CAMPING + CRASHING BOY'S NIGHT

i took these photos back in oregon the weekend brandon was in town. i'd been jonesing for a camping trip for some ridiculous reason, even though i really know it's the last thing i want to do, if i really sit and think about it. my parents have a little fire pit... bowl.. thing. we got a lot of use out of it while we were in town. about once every other week we'd start a small fire in it and roast up some wieners and it always seemed to scratch the itch. nothing better than a crisp fire on a slightly damp night, right? plus i really loved having the smell of an old fire on my sweater the next time i wore it.

soooo, i took these photos the weekend brandon was in town. all i've been doing since i got home is turn my house upside down and buy and return storage bins like a pro. anyway, i'm a huge fan of this guy and his handsome face and the fact that he goes along with dumb stuff i come up with. good team, holbrooks!

and this guy too.

and now a note about that bandaid. for almost two weeks that bandaid hung on. not only was huck really in love with it, but also it was really, genuinely stuck. it survived many shampoos, i was sure it was going to become a permanent fixture on his head. then one day huck came down the stairs and announced that he was finally ready for me to smear some peanut butter on him. it was kind of a wonderful parenting moment, a fistful of peanut butter and that throaty boy giggle of his when i asked him if he wanted some jelly in there too. he thought it was the funniest thing.  i'll enjoy huck thinking i'm funny as long as i can pull it off. r.i.p., little bandaid.

there's the hero shot.

listening to the pops and cracks of the fire, hamming it up ever so slightly, your basic huck.

okay! the end!

p.s. you want a graham cracker, a twix candy bar, THREE full roasted marshmallows (char the outsides once they've finished toasting, obviously), a quick schmear of nutella, and then your final graham cracker. maybe not as good as the mallow/peanut butter cup combo, but i promise you. you'll thank me later.

  1. Aaaaaaaah cuuute pictures! I'm like you in that I love the idea of camping, all the nice stuff, then I realise that the reality of camping sucks. Sleeping on rough cold ground with creepy crawlies and waking up either frozen to the bone or swelteringly hot just isn't all that fun! Back yarding is the way forward :o)

  2. Your family is so, so beautiful. I want a Huck someday. And a firepit. (There's already a Brandon, so I wasn't being mean by not declaring my want of him.) I also learned that peanut butter removes hair band-aids - always good to know I think!

  4. The only really good things about camping are the food and the fire, and maybe dressing up like an outdoorsy person. I'm intrigued by your s'more combo (twix especially), but I can't fathom 3 marshmallows on one graham cracker. How is that structurally possible?

  6. Hehehe. Why is it that kids love bandaids so much. I used to find myself SUPREMELY jealous of any kids coming into school with bandaids on their legs. Maybe it's like the kid version of a tattoo! I don't know! But I loved them!

  7. how you fit all that goodness between two graham crackers is beyond me, but it sounds amazing. love the hero shots, by the way.

  10. Fantastic pics! I think it is too cold to go out and sit around the fire. But, I'm sure once it is going it's quite pleasant out there.

  12. You have to be just the most genuine mother. I love the simplistic and cunning way you write. That boy of your seems like such an intelligent young man. It's inspiring to see the amount of love you and your family have for each other that you put out there on the ol' wide web. It makes me hopeful for the idea of becoming a parent someday. I never really have been excited about that prospect, you know sort of "well maybe, but I don't know"; but darn it that family of yours seems so sweet. I want that someday.
