POST-STORM CLEANUP

letter board via Letterfolk!

UPDATE FROM THE STICKS /
Submitted Monday, November 2-- wait is it still Monday?? I swear it's been dark since noon. #notreally

Last week we had a windstorm. The worst in something like 200 years. 70mph wind gusts, branches in the windows (not ours, thankfully), cardboard strewn all over the yard (yep, that one's us). It was big and it was sometimes-scary and the power went out for four hours, then it came back on for about three minutes (yayy!), then it went back out for another . . . forever (arghhg). Once the power was finally back on for good things seemed promising, but somehow the power forgot to bring with it the rest of modern life as we know it, so that was inconvenient. My phone wouldn't send or receive text messages at will and Gmail decided to stop delivering my mail to me, like, all together. No emails! For a week! But lots of phone calls from people being like, I'm EMAILING you what's the DEAL! Talking on the phone isn't fun but it turns out it's not THAT bad. Though trying to binge watch Netflix while the wifi isn't sure it remembers how to work . . . I mean, we have important business to attend to, people!

And then the Jeep up and stopped working. Soooooo . . . WHY??

Speaking of Netflix.

Did I mention it got dark at 9AM today?

Picture it: You've got B watching Mad Men on the iPad, me watching The West Wing on the laptop, Huck watching Disney Junior on the TV . . . all in the same room upstairs, all on the same futon, empty string cheese wrappers EVERYWHERE, needlepoint stuff off to one side. Sad translation of the term "Netflix and Chill," am I right?

Well. The West Wing? My new coping strategy for the worst parts of the Clomid (day 9 through ALL OF IT) is thinking about the Buddha (oh, the Clomid rage!) and watching lots of Netflix.

I'm just kidding about the Buddha.

So I finally finished The West Wing today (lots of fast forwarding through Jimmy Smits scenes, sorry dude, I just want Josh and Donna to kiss already). I cried like a blubbering baby (BARTLET FOR AMERICA!) (SAM SEABORN!!), as you do, and now that that's accomplished I am now prepared to engage in the all-important next step in The Great Netflix Experience (which mirrors The Great Reading Harry Potter Experience), which is the Rough Re-Entry Into Real Life experience. And how inadequate does it make me feel that I'm looking around me and I'm like,"This isn't the White House! I don't work at the White House! Nobody is racing around me with witty banter! I have nothing important to do! How did this house get so messy?!!"

And how cute is Josh Lyman? He's kind of a creep but also, mostly pretty cute. #redheads

Then you walk around collecting empty Diet Coke cans and fishing that pillow out from between the couch cushions and clearing all your abandoned socks and blankets and sweatshirts from your Netflix nest of garbage all the while you're like, "I'm pretty sure I have something I should be doing right now . . . what was it?"

It takes you a minute! You know.

Luckily my email finally decided to get its act together this morning. I woke up this morning to 300 not-junk unread emails after going to bed with zero. THREE HUNDRED!?!?

(Soooo, if you emailed me this week . . . I AM SO SORRY!)

Anyway, that's the update from the sticks. Post-storm clean up. Clomid storms, Netflix storms, windstorms, car trouble storms, ramping-up-to-the-holidays-needlepoint-gifts storms. We are in storm repair mode.

(Though I might already be ready for another Netflix binge instead. Let's just say I've been operatically singing "Cloooo-miiiiid" a lot these days. Any series recommendations?)

The end.

  1. If you're ok with crime dramas, longmire is extremely addicting. It makes me wanna up and move to Wyoming, even though I've been a suburbs girl my whole life and almost cried the one time I rode a horse (there were circumstances).

  2. My advice would be never go to Wellington in New Zealand because 140kph wind gusts are just another day at the office! Seriously, it is impossible to wear a skirt without looking indecent and hairdressers specialise in the wind blown look. Wearing a school skirt every day was a traumatic experience.

I've been binge watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries on the 'flix. Australian, 1920s, mysteries, female badassery. I like it.

  3. Watch Shameless!! Looks like Netflix has Season 1-4

    1. YESSSSS to Shamless. Very good. Very addicting.

But if you loved West Wing, you MUST watch Newsroom (another Sorkin masterpiece).

Also, Jessica Jones just came out on Netflix and it has me totally hooked, and terrified.

And my favorite show of all time (West Wing is #2) would definitely be Six Feet Under--it has a heart like NONE other, is incredibly watchable, and is perfectly empathetic when life is really hard.

  4. Friday Night Lights / Luther / The Fall / Broadchurch / Jekyll (if it's still available) - all bingeworthy

  5. I agree with Lauren! Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries is the jam netflix binge! Also, what type of chickens do you have? Chicken butts are the best!

  6. How about Gilmore Girls? If you like Felicity, you'll love these girls! Glad you made it through that wind storm! Have an awesome week!

    xo

  7. Do you get Heartland on American Netflix? It's a Canadian show about a horse ranch in Alberta, for some reason I think you'd really like it. Or Being Erica (another Canadian show). The BBC shows are really great too. Any of the Netflix originals are also great (About A Boy, Scrotal Recall, Master of None)! Also you should watch the Cinderella on Netflix with real people, it was so so good and made me cry!

  8. Right now I'm watching the 3rd season of Mr. Selfridge

  9. West Wing!!! It makes me so happy when people watch it. I've written one poem in my life - 8th grade and an assignment - and it was about Jed Bartlet. I made a trivia board game. And many more embarrassing fangirl acts...

Best part about watching the West Wing is a new appreciation for Thanksgiving: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luTzmLiVC4I

  10. House of Cards! It is so good. I just finished watching the series for the third time.

  11. Rosemary and Thyme! :) Silly BBC show about two middle-aged women botanists that solve crime.

Also: in times of storms, libraries have full seasons of shows you can check out. Much more predictable than internet, sometimes.

  12. I'm re-watching Lost, and it's awesome....again. You seem like you were a Lost-ie!!
    Here's a couple more I've enjoyed:
    Broadchurch
A Young Doctor's Notebook (it has Harry Potter in it!)
    The Killing
And when we need a laugh and want to tune out, we turn on Scrubs!!

  13. the post-west wing binge is a painful withdrawal...I do it every 2-4 years or so (ironically around election time, reminds me of a hollywood lovely "all politicians want the best things in the world"-type universe!). I tend to switch immediately to rewatching FNL to remind myself that small non-white house lives are lovely, too. Here are my other binge suggestions: 1. Jessica Jones, 2. Damages, 3. Fargo, 4. Top of the Lake, 5. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (ahhh teenage years....), 6. The Leftovers

  14. I binged my way through Jane the Virgin on Netflix in 2 days (of stomach flu) and got myself caught up to current episodes. It's a totally soapy spoof of a telenovela that reminds me of old-school WB shows. So addicting, so eyerolly, so cute.

  15. Do you finish your own needlepoint projects or do you send them out to be finished? This is the part I don't quite understand about needlepointing!

  16. Watch The Newsroom! Also by Aaron Sorkin and will help you get through West Wing withdrawals (it's as good). Peaky Blinders is awesome. An oldie but goodie - Pushing Daisies. And of course - Breaking Bad if you haven't binged on that one yet. :)

  17. Listen...Doctor Who. That is all. It is so cheesy and campy, but it is oh so good.

  18. Watch the Newsroom! It's also by Aaron Sorkin and is as good as West Wing. An oldie but goodie that is so awesome: Pushing Daisies. Peaky Blinders is fantastic. And of course, if you haven't already completely binged on Breaking Bad it's a must. :)

  19. United States of Tara, Jane the Virgin, Grace & Frankie, Master of None. All SO GOOD! Happy Netflix and chilling :)

    1. YES to all of these, especially Grace and Frankie...can't wait for Season 2!!

  20. I binge-watched the first season of Jessica Jones on Friday. Thought it was cool. Def not kid-friendly. You are so right about re-entry. It's rough!

    ReplyDelete
  21. You should definitely watch Don't Trust the B- in Apt 23 because 1) Krysten Ritter is amazing and everyone should strive to be like her; 2) James Van Der Beek; and 3) James Van Der Beek.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Recently rewatched all of Chuck and Don't Trust The B; finally continued watching Peaky Blinders, started and finished Jane The Virgin (it was ok, too soap-opera-y), Jessica Jones, Scream Queens (online, not netflix), and a lot of good and also terrible movies (like the one netflix keeps advertising with Pierce Brosnan. awful). Luther is the next show I'm watching.
Otherwise I've enjoyed the dark Young Doctors Noteboook, Friday Night Lights, and Lost.
Chuck is fine with kids, probably. Idk I was watching Pulp Fiction and Amityville Horror when I was 7, so I'm probably not the best judge of kid friendly.

Also, Hong is right, Krysten Ritter is amazing and idol-status.

  23. Jane the Virgin - worst name ever for one of the cutest shows ever. Will TOTALLY curb the clomid rage; trust me. :)

  24. 1) Veep... hilarious and helps you out if you want another DC show
    2) Totally digging Damages right now. Glen Close, Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan (Dreamy!)
    3) Jane the Virgin (an utter delight)
    4) Friday Night Lights. Friday Night Lights. FNL. FNL is the reason that television was created. Everything that they came before it? Fluffer. It all just set the stage for the most perfect show ever. Friday. Night. Lights. People will ask you if you're Team Riggins or Team Saracen. This is a false dichotomy. In that... you're actually Team Coach Taylor. Texas Forever? No! Coach Taylor Forever!

    1. YES! Friday Night Lights. My husband and I watched the whole series in a 2 month span (we are ex-Texans in Brooklyn) and I am waiting for some more time to pass so I can start all over again. And Tim Riggins - that is all.

  25. I need a new treadmill zone out show so this feed is awesome! Just finished a historical fiction fluff show -that I totally enjoyed, husband not so much- called Reign.

  26. I'm re-watching The X-Files in anticipation of the new mini-season in January. Mulder + Scully 4 eva.

  27. Oh, there's nothing better than a West Wing marathon. I'm with you on skipping the Santos scenes - it's hard to invest in a character 6 seasons in to a 7 season show. I ran across this Bartlet for America mug a while back, and I'm going to have to order it one day: http://www.cafepress.com/mf/20587654/bartlet-for-america-mug_mugs?productId=147916725

  29. Give me West Wing forever and ever, on repeat. I cannot stop!

  30. Hmmmm Josh Lyman and Sam Seaborn. Pretty.much hewven.

  31. Dig is an Israeli American crime drama, kind of like a Dan Brown novel come to life, with lots of twists, a religious cult, and very hunky actors.
American Crime with Felicity Huffman and Timithy Hutton is great.
    The Affair is excellent.

  32. Jane the Virgin and Friday Night Lights!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have to suggest Grey's Anatomy (but there are 11 seasons of 1hr episodes, don't know if that is good or bad....), Friends, Gossip Girl (though they will both make you miss NYC like crazy). I would also recommend Law and Order SVU, it is good because you don't have to watch it in order, but you can still get to know the characters.

  34. Scandal is not as trashy as I was expecting and is another great DC show with politics, murder, etc. Broadchurch is some great storytelling, but can be hard to watch if you are a parent. I've also heard that PBS' "Poldark" is good, but I haven't ventured there yet.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Definitely Newsroom for West Wing withdrawals (surprised no one mentioned CJ. CJ! Best Press Sec ever). And I second Shameless. Emmy Rossum and William H Macy and the rest. So good! So good.

  36. Friday Night Lights
    The Fosters
    House of Cards
    Reckless
    October Road
    Girls Guide to Divorce

  37. Veronica Mars, Jessica Jones, Master of None, Mozart in the Jungle, Man in the High Castle, Justified, The Great British Baking Show, You're the Worst, Call the Midwife

  38. Oh also just finished Flesh and Bone. It's pretty nuts, but definitely binged it like crazy.

    1. SO NUTS!!! I ordered Starz just for it after watching a free first episode...so CRAZY!

  39. The Grand Hotel. It's a cross between Downton Abbey and Desperate Housewives. There are subtitles (it's in Spanish) but don't let that scare you away. It's amazing.

    ReplyDelete
  40. WEST WING!!! West wing is everything. If you are sure you don't want to binge watch the first 3 seasons again then watch Lost. But only if you didn't catch it the first time around.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Holy cow I can't believe there is another Grand Hotel lover!!! No one seems to have heard of it - it is the BEST secret on Netflix that really shouldn't be a secret and apparently it's no longer a secret! Think Downton Abbey on steroids. The best romance couple that you want to hook up so bad it drives you insane. Lots of murder mystery. My friend kept telling me to watch it, but because it has subtitles I just kind of brushed it off... then one day I decided to give it a go and COULD NOT STOP WATCHING. And if your husband gets on your case for spending all day long watching.... ya just tell him, I'M LEARNING SPANISH.

  42. Mad Men trumps West Wing.
    that is all ...

  43. I feel I might be an semi professional when it comes to Netflix series worthy of our time. My favorite picks (note: I have a bias for BBC and any/all British Crime shows… because they are less violent/gun based):
    1. Luther
    2. Happy Valley
    3. Broacchurch
    4. Top of the Lake (New Zealand)
    5. The Red Road
    6. The Returned - - ABSOLUTELY LOVING THIS
    7. Peaky Blinders
    8. Call the Midwife (might be risky right now, or totally good juju- your call)
    9. The Killing
    10. The Fall (note: Gillian Anderson ages backwards. It's true)

  44. Also - Poldark (PBS) - AMAZING. Loved it.

  45. This is a perfect description of a netflix binge and aftermath. Also second the crush on Josh Lyman.

  46. iZombie! If you haven't seen it, it's similar to Veronica Mars-style.
