ADVICE FROM STRANGERS

today, while we were waiting on line to pay for our lunch, some very nice stranger in a long black coat stopped me to tell me how cute my kid is. this happens a lot because, well he is. but this stranger didn't stop there. next i was told to "take lots of pictures," reminded "this goes fast," and then "mine's twenty one," and then lastly, "no but don't turn your back on them for even a minute, 'cause mine fell down the stairs once--they were concrete stairs mind you--but he was fine, he didn't need surgery, just some bruising, maybe a concussion, but we were lucky! so..."

...at this point my food had arrived and i was already halfway out the door, nodding politely and smiling all the way. yes yes, kind person, thanks. no concrete stairs. right. vigilance. yes. and photos. okay.

so when we got home we took an obnoxious amount of photos... i do like to do what i'm told. (hah.)

thank you kindly for the good-slash-weird advice!
love, that cute baby and his somewhat-wary mother

(pardon huck's shirtlessness. i talked it over with brandon and we're both okay with posting these photos.)

  1. Bwahahahahahah!

Love the backing away and the polite nodding and smiling -- and all the while you're probably like, "Ooooookay, crazy lady!"

(In the nicest way, of course. Hee!)

    Gorgeous pictures, you two!

  13. i really kind of loved this. a lot. and i think that you going home and taking all these pictures is awesome (along with the fact that, yeah, you'll probably cherish this post one day). and honestly, (also not a mom here), i think parents glorify the younger years after going through the teenage years because for all the teething and breastfeeding and fussiness, babies and young kids just love their parents with so much unconditional love that looking back on it, it all becomes this glorified, wonderful, albeit hazy from sleep, existence. and every parent ever loves to talk to parents with young kids because it takes them back (hence all the weird advice and random stories) to that wonderful place. i'm not a parent, but it's just my observation from the outside. and you were very kind to smile and nod and take it all in stride. i would expect no less :)

  14. Adorable. My boy loves it when I turn the camera phone so we can see ourselves - he squeals "Mama!" and I just HAVE to keep snapping pictures. How can you not? I know the crazy lady meant well, but were you not kind of giggling on the inside? "Take lots of pictures!" Um, okay crazy lady...I've got a WHOLE BLOG GOING ON HERE...

  17. Too funny. I don't normally comment but had to this time. Just the other week I was walking into the hospital clinics with my two little boys. Some lady waiting outside asked me if they were twins (common question. they are not.). Then she proceeded to tell me how to make a girl baby. I mean, she went into the detail of timing sex and mucus texture and everything. And she told me like 3 times loud enough for everyone around me to hear. The best part was when she said that she only wanted girls and that it worked for her all 3 times. I really wanted to say that it was probably just that her husband could only produce girls. But I kept that to myself and just backed away as fast as I could.

(PS--Please tell me the shirtless comment was a joke.)
