TO TELL YOU THAT THE DREAMS YOU PLAN REALLY CAN COME TRUE

huck the turtle, in lost boy war paint

tonight as i was putting huck to bed, just after we read our four bedtime books and just after the "mom, let's talk" part, where i say, "what do you want to talk about?" and then huck pulls something out of thin air like, "i like bats" and off we go, and just before his eyes finally drooped shut for the night, huck requested a bedtime song.

this is a new one for us, just in this last week. i used to sing to huck every night, back when he was the size for rocking to sleep, but then came the nursing-to-sleep stage, and after that came the arm-down-the-shirt-in-total-silence stage, and most recently it's been the just-lay-there-next-to-me-i-got-this stage. And now we're back to singing to sleep, and i tell you i couldn't be happier. huck calls in the requests and i play DJ, choir and orchestra. there are very few songs in the universe i don't know the words to, i am freakishly qualified for this job. it's my stupid human trick. go on, try me.

tonight huck requested "the second star to the right" first, which is his favorite and the one that usually does it. then he wanted the song from tarzan. "mom, the come stop your crying it will be all right song." and then he wanted another song from peter pan. and then he asked for a song from frozen, and wouldn't you know it, i don't know any of the words to any of the songs from frozen. but huck was into it and his arms were flying and we sort of made it up as we went along.

"let it goooooo! let it gooooo! something something something MOOOOORE."

i'm in the final stretch of the very end of writing this book, and the notes in my iPhone right now are a total mess of nonsense sentence fragments and half-formed thoughts and reminders to revise this chapter or edit that part or add these paragraphs to that essay, but tonight i closed down all that noise and opened my to-do list, typed in all caps, and marked it urgent:

LEARN THE WORDS TO THE SONGS FROM FROZEN FOR HUCK.

so, this is just a note to say i really love parenting right now.

  2. huck makes for a wonderful turtle. it weirdly has me in the mood for reading esio trot?

also, if you are going to be singing these songs, i think it's only fair that you continue your non-existant history of recording them and sharing them with the world? it's only fair, considering you have the loveliest voice!

    good luck with the book!

  5. he is the sweetest boy i have ever read of :) my daughter is in the stage where i need to hold her with her head on my shoulder, even if she wiggles a little, and licks my arm from time to time (?), just hold her and hum, and that gets her to sleep. parenting is both simple and so gosh-darn grand.

  12. Oh my gosh, I'm the same way. I literally know the words to every song. And you have to learn the words to Frozen. Such a good soundtrack. Another must from that song is "In Summer", you won't regret it!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFatVn1hP3o
