We Love Our Neighborhood

We really, really love our neighborhood.

This is our street, which has not had a single bed bug report. Now that is something!

We have really great doormen, who are so convinced that I should not have to perform any physical labor while pregnant that they have shown me their top-secret maintenance buzzer, and even offered to take down my laundry for me.

There is a Shake Shack and a Magnolia Bakery and a Pinkberry down the street.

And brownstones!

"This place is a tomb! I'm going to the nut shop where it's fun!"
I'm only sort of mostly sure that this is the nut shop in question. But how delightful is that?
(Their frozen yogurt is only so-so, but did I mention that we have a Pinkberry?)

Speaking of You've Got Mail, this is the actual store front that was used as The Shop Around The Corner. And it is literally around the corner from our apartment. I KNOW.

This place is just up the street.

This place is just down the block.

This is a gorgeous church we found down the street totally on accident the other day while we were looking for Freddie & Peppers pizza.

(We never made it to Freddie & Peppers, but we did get to hear some bagpipes!)

  1. Um, I love your neighborhood. And your green bathroom. Is it okay if I move in? You won't mind, right? I'm happy to get up and take care of one of those middle-of-the-night feedings for you (bottle of course).

  2. oh wait. i know freddie and peppers. its just a teensy bit south of the hummus place. maybe 74th and amsterdam? between 74th and 75th on the east side of the street. you take some steps down into it. it is teensy tiny. i love it. i like their whole wheat with feta and spinach. this part of ny feels like the part of the city that raised me--the part i always come back to again and again to run errands and hang out and the like.

  3. meg, it turns out we ate there four years ago when we lived in brooklyn and came up to watch the macy's people blow up the thanksgiving floats, so we should have known where it was! we were convinced it was on columbus, and then we got distracted by shack sauce. next time i will try the spinach feta, that sounds amazing.

  6. Oh my pinkberry!!!! I love your neighborhood. I desperately want to move to ny too. How did you find your place? What about finding work? No one will even talk to me about work until after I'm moved but I can't move until I have work. Ugh! Will you help me understand? Salinalyn@gmail.com

  7. Okay, I kind of hate you because the UWS is my dream neighborhood. I love the UWS! Love it. Seriously, when my girls and I were FNOing on Saturday, we were asking were each of us would live - guess where I picked? Guess? Ahh! I have to stop being jealous of you rrrright nnnnow. Okay, done being jealous.

I love our ward and our parks and our colorfulness (the people) and our dog poop and my husband's 3 second commute and my view of the Hudson and running across the GW bridge and that I can take the C and be in your neighborhood in 20 minutes (wait, I said I was going to stop being jealous!)

PS maybe we should meet and have a cookie at Levain. I think that if we meet up (and I think I'll like you:) I will have an even harder time being jealous of your neighborhood if I know you in real life.

    Love:)

    wow. long comment.

  8. Wow that is one great neighborhood! Umm I like everything about it!!

I like all the llama farms in mine :) but the manure smell on a windy day is a killer!

  9. Levain = greatest cookie bakery in the world (except for maybe violet and ruby in hell's kitchen). It's on 74th and Amsterdam. Let's do this! Maybe a Wednesday or a Thursday.

  11. ok, I have to admit - living in this part of NYC looks like a very interesting daily life. these blocks are so cute and charming and I can't help but secretly wish I'd get to live there once in my life. Probably wont, but I can read your blog and pretend. ;)

What I like about MY neighborhood is that it's safe, peaceful. full of green trees and bushes, the air is fresh, there are no sirens or parades or other crazy stuff. ;) There's blue skies and only 20 minute walk to the town center. ok, sounds so boring but it's quite nice.

  12. Hi! I found your blog via Cjane. Your life sounds kind of like mine for the last year. We live in Dublin, Ireland, where my husband attends vet school. I can so relate to moving far away, not having a real income (wouldn't that be nice--and novel?), and being pregnant while doing so! We had our baby in May, and she is the joy of our household. I hope yours will be the same for you. :)

  13. Your neighbourhood looks amazing. Very chic and happening indeed. Gateshead in the rainy North of England doesn't have the same glamour that's for sure, but it's funny how home is where your heart is in the end. I have to confess to a large pang of jealousy though. New York City!! Just amazing.

  14. I love that my neighborhood has my house and my children in it. That's about it.

  15. I'm so jealous of your NYC neighborhood right now. My neighborhood has one epicerie that's only open until noon everyday (except Wednesdays - closed on Wednesdays!) and a bar that serves food only some of the time, and closes when the owner feels like it. That's it. That's all we got.
I'd kill for a pinkberry. And a Starbucks.

  16. Barnaby, Pan...I don't think we're in Moscow any more.

    :D

  17. Goodness, looking at your neighborhood makes me jealous. The only epicly awesome thing about mine is that Disney World is 3 miles away. But that's work, so it's not terribly exciting.

  18. Who knew New York could be so beautiful? I didn't. But now I do. Wow. I hope I get to visit it someday. :)

  19. My neighborhood has night games, lawns, secret passages in fences, mountain views, a breeze from a river, a bus stop just 4 houses away, a pack of wandering children, mile-high cottonwood trees and maples, Oktoberfest, neighbors who bring you crescent rolls, the best cookies, Rock Band parties, and is minutes from a Costco.

  20. oh you don't even know how much i miss that neighborhood. if you're looking for the freddie and pepper's i'm thinking of, it's like a block away from the chipotle grill on the east side of the street (the one on like amsterdam and something in the mid-70s). the reason you might not have been able to find it is because it's actually underground. you have to look down to see it. it's right next to a fairly large deli that has flower stands and fruit outside.

  21. I LOVE your neighboorhood, so much I'm so jealous :) how fun, how beautiful. I love the pictures. I love seeing where you are and what you are up to.

  22. my neighborhood has the most neon lights east of Asia. And 24 access to anything your heart desires. No bugs. No rain. No weather. Just hot and sunny. Family, friends, great community sports. I love it.

  23. I love that you live around the corner from Shop Around the Corner....if I didn't like you already you would now be my new best friend! And you quoted "You've Got Mail!" Yes, yes, you must be my new best friend :-)

  24. I love the old buildings around where I live, even though everyone says it's the rough part of town. But, I really want to live around the corner from the shop around the corner. Jealous.

  25. LOL! I love your neighborhood too! For all the reasons you said. :)

  26. I love your neighborhood! very chic. I am adjusting to my new neighborhood too. I live in the city of Houston; now inside the loop. Thanks for the blog idea. I am going to take a neighborhood walk this weekend. tootles!

  27. I'll tell you what I love about YOUR neighborhood: that amazing tree and really sweet bridge. LOVE IT!

And also, how exactly did you wind up inside a church when you were searching for pizza?

What I love about my neighborhood is that in about a month, I'll be in an entirely different neighborhood! But until then, what I love is my neighbors. They're awesome.

  28. uhm the best thing I can think to say about my neighborhood is that I can walk to Arby's....so you see my conundrum.

  29. So I'm super behind in blog-reading-land... but going through your blog on this lovely Sunday morning has made me want to move to NYC. I've never even been (despite having lived in Syracuse for 5years). Now I want to live there! LOVE your blog.
