the city, she gives and she gives

i feel like things must be better in the city. all i have to do is whisper my hopes and dreams to the skyscrapers, and they send my requests heavenward, and then all of my earthly desires manifest themselves along the concrete.

yesterday, after weeks of thinking, "i really must get a case for this iphone already before i drop it," i found a lovely, homeless blue iphone case, just sitting in front of the duane reade waiting for me. you can never be sure about these things, but i think it was left there just for me, by the lady of manhattan herself. she was in great shape, that blue iphone cover, she just needed a little spit shine (and also a thorough disinfecting).

who is this lady of manhattan, i wonder? is she the statue of liberty? the ghost of the chrysler building? my urban fairy godmother? whoever she is, i think she likes me.

ust the other day brandon told me he plans to be "one of those new yorkers." you know, one who never leaves the island unless it is involving a.) the beach, or b.) disneyland.

huck likes new york a lot but then what does he know? he's only four months old but already he prefers to see the city by arms. no strollers, thanks (strollers are for napping), no slings or carriers.. mama's two arms, please, and the whole city in front of him. he likes it, and golly! dude is heavy.

  2. I just moved to NYC myself from Texas and am charmed. Today was lovely, though the lady required coat, hat and gloves for her sunday party.

  3. Ugh, how the city teases me! Two wonderfully warm days and then back to the dreary tundra. Blerg.

And why would you ever want to leave the city except for the reasons aforementioned?

  7. Most days I am happy not to live "in" the city. Any city.
But some days...I want a cute tiny (but nice and mod) condo right in the heart of NYC, which I have never been to, but think I would fall in love with were I to ever get there. Secret Agent Man keeps me far, far away...

  10. You know...I live in the EXTREME opposite location of you. And I LOVE her so much as well. One week I was thinking how I needed an iPod case. Well, while walking my children through a little path that leads to the park I found one. Right there on the side of the path. So, maybe if you love your city, or small little town, they really do take care of you. My husband jokes that I don't leave our town, and it's true. My world is here, within it's limits. XOXO you and your city!

  12. Have you tried a baby bjorn? It's a carrier and he could face forward. My little Salem was the same way.

And PORTLAND? It is my city, too. Wanna get some coffee at the Bipartisan?

  13. Whenever you talk about the city, it makes my heart ache. I wanna go there so bad. It doesn't help that i'm watching Will and Grace reruns and basking in the NYC-ness.....It's FAB!

  14. You should try the Beco Gemini! I have a chunk of a 4 month old boy, too, and he loves this carrier. Facing out for adventures, facing in for naps. It's much easier on your back than a Bjorn or a Moby (boy I loved that when he was younger/smaller) because it puts the weight on your hips. Plus you'll have two free hands!

  15. Hahah! I think Portland is mad at me. Even though I'm certainly fond of that city, I always gets lost. Never been to New York though. I feel like I have with your writing & pictures. One day perhaps . . .

  17. if you have a free moment while in P-town Mr J, Miss M and I would love to take you and the Huck to gelato, or cupcakes, or peachwave. Have you done peachwave- we've become addicts- you probably have similar but better in that big city of yours. Just in case you have not been introduced its frozen yogurt(multi flavors to mix and match and a bar of toppings to cover it in) but anyway we would love to share a sweet treat with you both and meet that sweet babe of yours;-)
