I GUESS THE LORD MUST BE IN NEW YORK CITY

I can't thank Leigh enough for inviting me to be a part of her baby wearing documentary. I've loved getting to know the other women involved and the creative outlet this has been for me has been indescribably good.

Being a mother is something worth celebrating. That's what I think. Being a mother, raising a child, loving a child . . . what a beautiful, important thing to do. I love baby wearing, because in the act of wearing your child you simultaneously become your most vulnerable and your most powerful self. Some might say that having children and sacrificing your ambitions to raise them is limiting, or weak. I say it is the opposite. It is very essence of strength, and not for the faint of heart.

As a mama, it is so important to have a community of loving, supportive women around you, and I am lucky to have that both in my real life and in my Internet life. These women I've met are doing are astounding things, I feel humbled to be listed in their company.

Our challenge for the third round was to either make a video or do a series of photos chronicling "A Day In The Life," so I chose to do both. I hope you enjoy.

  1. oh i love this. and his little face with the frosting - too cute!

i have those j. crew pants and i heart them so much. however, to be honest, i would have preferred a lighter shoe (even though those shoes were bangin').

all in all though, a wonderful post. a wonderful outfit. a wonderful glimpse into the little city i call home.

  3. Nat, that was beautiful! I just watched it with my 16 month old son, and he loved it too and giggled. You look great, those heels are killer! It makes me want to move to NYC right now and have a cupcake. I really loved your sentiment about being a powerful mom, and feeling your strongest and most vulnerable at the same time while baby-wearing. I can completely relate, and you feel it much more than when you use a stroller I think. Interesting thought... Also, your post about missing Moscow yesterday and your dogs and that old life almost brought me to tears! It was really, really beautiful and excellent REAL writing.

I watched that podcast of you talking about your blog awhile back and in it you mention how people tell you how you used to do real writing and not just cute photos of your baby. Nat, I am impressed, that was real honest to goodness great writing, and not just for a blog, for all writing!

  4. This was so perfect! Love!

Your outfit = so trendy and cute and I liked it a lot. You look great in that outfit! Definitely wear it again. And I agree with J. the shoes made the outfit!

Also the part in the film where Huck smiles with frosting all over his chubby little face melted my heart a little. I've said it before and I'll say it again - he is seriously the cutest, most "delicious" baby there ever was. True story.

  12. OK, I have a baby boy just a few months behind Huck and I loved watching your little guy ride along in his sling. The pudgy foot kicking along behind you as you walked - I totally was laughing about my baby doing that just yesterday.

And frosted baby fingers? Yes please!

  32. So, if I come to NYC, will you take me shopping so that I can dress as cute as you?
I just have no sense of style and when I'm looking at clothes I can't help but think "What would Nat the Fat Rat wear....?"
