FALL WISHES

i stole a peek out the window late this afternoon at the sky overhead and it hurt my feelings.  oh, this weather. all afternoon we'd been cooped up inside, and we just really needed to get out.

the clouds darkened to a shade just shy of slate, but i scooped up my huckleberry and tossed on my coat. we were going to the playground, clouds or not. when we got to the park, the playground was empty but for puddles. so we swung and crawled and played in the quiet misty air until our knees were soaked and then we went home for baths.

i think this fall is going to be a good one.

  2. Glad to see I'm not the only one up till 2 in the morning! I have the same wish about writing for the fall, i will finally have some free time and hope to get back to blogging. On a side note, holy crap Huck is going to be crawling and walking soon, watch out that's trouble! that pic of him next to the fence just kills me! :)

  5. oh how I love these pictures...they make me want to just run up my stairs two at a time to my sleeping son and kiss his cheeks. I think I'll share your fall wishes if that's OK...they sound pretty perfect to me.

  8. I totally relate to this. Fall does this to me--inspires me but leaves me feeling so inadequate. It's like there's never enough time to do anything but curl up with something warm to drink; and then you blink and Christmas is over and you're thinking "I thought it was Halloween."

I've noticed it every year, but I have especially noticed it this year. Iris is nearly 8 months old. 8 months. And we're about to have a first Halloween and a first Thanksgiving and a first Christmas...and you get the idea. At first I started freaking out--she has to have the cutest costume and a Christmas dress and I must take pictures of everything.

Then I stopped. Somehow I did. And we had a day like the one you described--stuck inside and gloomy. But somehow that was good. Like it was a breather. And I thought only about that day. I'm trying to do that with all the days now.

  9. I think Fall inspires everyone in some way, especially my husband. He writes sooo much about and during Fall. The four seasons are important for any writer, I think. Personally, Fall inspires me to spend more money on clothes than I have. Oops. My number one Fall wish is to make the most of this holiday season, as it is my baby girl's first time experiencing it. Yes, I'm sure she won't remember it, but I will.

  10. I'd never really thought about it until I read this post and all these comments, but fall really IS the most creative time of the year for me. The weather, the inspiration, the EVERYTHING are all just too much to not take advantage of talents and write or photograph or something, ANYTHING to keep from losing the inspiration.

  13. I think we October babies are at our wishiest this time of year.

By the time the leaves have all fallen I want to nurture my marriage and friendships with everything in me, grow my blog, do a few good deeds for those without warmth or bounty for the holidays, and bake a mean batch of shortbread cookies.

Oh, and get my high bun to look as fabulous as yours!

  14. Fall TOTALLY is the season for wishes!!! That holiday season is looming, and it makes me feel all cozy and reflective. I'm actually have a delightfully productive fall so far (this being Utah, and still warm and filled with buttery mellow sunshine). I just bought a vintage school chair I'm refinishing (I'm thinking a bright raspberry color); I bought supplies to make my niece and nephews doorway puppet theaters for Christmas; I'm making a board-book box into a dollhouse for the illustrious Miss Camryn for Christmas; I'm FINALLY finishing that needlepoint sampler you modeled on your Babble blog. It feels good to be busy! Though I must say my biggest goal this season is to GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!!! That's sometimes so hard in the suburbs when parks are farther away, but I'm determined to get out and enjoy the last of our beautiful Indian Summer weather before another Utah winter settles in and leeches the soul out of me. Oh! And I play to perfect the topknot/cardigan/leggings combo and read some good old Gothic Lit as the weather cools. Totally important, right???

  17. Those pictures of you and the Hucks (where he is on the swing), are SO good. He'll have them when you're both old, and he's a man, and he'll feel so glad, like he could almost remember, feel it somewhere in his body, that he was there. Don't you think?

  18. i'm pretty sure i've said it before and I'll say it again...your writing speaks to my soul and gives words to those thoughts and feelings that I had only just begun to discover (it's pretty convenient that our little guys are the same age so your writing is almost always relevant in my life). anyway, you prove to be my favorite blogger. again and again. keep doing what you do sista...i think that blogging is such a marvelous phenomenon...bringing people together in dialogue that might not have ever had the chance to converse otherwise ... not to mention you're gosh dern good at it!
