IN WHICH A GIRL WEARS FALSE LASHES FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON

so, okay.

so for alt summit i bought a pair of false lashes on a whim. you know, girl things.

by the second morning as i was applying them i realized they were a lot faster to apply than mascara. (most likely because i layer three kinds of mascara. i have a system.) and then at night when i'd pull them off i'd think, crap. these are much easier to remove than mascara too.

it got my wheels all wheely and things.

so i bought a few packs of falsies at the duane reade down the street the other day and decided to conduct a highly scientific experiment. i mean, a girl's gotta have a project is what it comes down to.

the hypothesis: wearing false lashes every day is NOT weird and NOT trampy and NOT an entirely silly notion. not necessarily, anyway.

it's been about four days now and i've just been wearing false lashes everywhere like a glamazon. i wear them to play little people farm animals with huck and to run to bed bath & beyond to buy storage baskets for the bathroom. important, glamorous places. so far, it's been a total game changer. i need 50% less make up to feel made up, my hair looks way better messy (and hallelujah, there's just no fighting the mess on my head with this post-baby regrowth), and, contrary to every ounce of logic i possess, the faker they seem in the tray the better they look on. they stay on ALL day. it's quite perplexing. this is not what i expected.

i've decided the matter demands further research.

and so. false lash february. it's catchy.

  1. i adore fake eyelashes, although i'm pretty sure i couldn't wear them to my stuffy job in midtown where we wear suits and talk about important things like exchange rates (we could be talking about false lashes, damnit!) my only problem is when you look down while wearing false eyelashes, it's totally obvious. otherwise they look all around fabulous and fairly natural. your thoughts are on this dilemma are welcome.

  2. I am so in for False Lash February. Buying lashes today!

  3. I'm in! Your tweeting on the subject already sold me. I used to wear them occasionally but worried they were weird for working at my desk job. BUT since my job is now cleaning crumbs and wiping bums I'm pretty sure whatever I choose to wear is fine. We have no dress code round these parts.

  5. So excited to try this... thanks for the challenge!

  6. Ah, such a cute idea. Weird fact - my dog, a gordon setter, has the most beautiful long eyelashes in the world. Jealous as :)

  7. I want the lashes! They look fab. I had a Shellac manicure two weeks ago and it looks fab still. Worth the extra cash for sure.

  8. Ooh, I don't wear much makeup, but my lashes MUST be long and curled. Maybe I should gave fakes a try? If you decide to go back to mascara, definitely try They're Real by Benefit. One coat (okay, maybe 5) and you're good to go. Here's a link to my before and after- I think it's pretty impressive.

  9. ok your talking to a falsie pro here....I used to wear them all the time.. But what I ended up discovering is how to make them look super real and blend into your own lashes...I would cut them in half and where them on the ends of my lashes with mascara, however this system is in no way time friendly and with two babies it doesn't work so well!
So maybe I will try fulls for feb!
Your so right though, when you have lashes on it's way easier to feel prettier and more made up.
Also you can wear you same lashes for quite awhile...if everyday I would say just see how they look after two weeks, they can be worn several several times and I've never gotten any infections, and that is with me putting mascara on them too...

  10. I'm in!! I'm doing a half marathon on Sunday and it's my birthday on Sunday...I can't imagine two better opportunities to wear falsies!!!

  11. i'm so down. i have butterflies just thinking about it! i've had some fake lashes in the cupboard under the sink for about a year now. they're comin' out. they're comin' out.

  12. This is reallllly tempting. I am already the most high maintainence out of 8 sister-in-laws, so I guess there's nothing to lose! As, ironically, the most thrifty of the bunch... I am interested to see the cost comparison results of your experiment. Very interesting, indeed.

  13. I've never worn them before so now I have to try! I've also been dying to try a gel mainicure but don't make enough dough to keep up with the habit.

  14. I have never tried the false lashes but I do have a pair hanging out in my bathroom. You've inspired me to stop being rude to those lovely lashes and give them a go...

  15. Oooo lala. I bought two pairs of fan lashes a gaziliion years ago from elf.com (for $1. One dollar!) and still yet to wear them. Perhaps playing with the Q dude IS the perfect time to try them out.
    Love the gellac!

  17. I'm in. But help! Need some major assistance applying these bad boys!

  18. false lash february? yes please! thank you for giving me an excuse to rock some sweet eye lashes while at home with my baby. she'll love 'em! any suggestions on brands???

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ok I'm down! What are you using to adhere these bad boys? Regular lash adhesive or somthing special? I've used the full lash, full lash cut in half, and the singles that you attach to the outer lashes. I'm a fan of all though I like the natural look of the singles but it takes mucho time. Can't wait for fabulous falsie February. Im always up for feeling less frumpy while being a mama/house wifey, like wearing my hottest heels paired with sweats while vacuuming. Thanks for sharing with us!

  20. i'm in for this... i paid the big bucks and goy eyelash extensions... i loved how they looked, just didn't love always going in for a "fill", the price and how they felt. hated how they felt!!
    brands to use??
also... i think i need a video tutorial from you on how to apply them. how do you get them straight and how do they stay on all day?!

  21. Hi Nat!
    1. I love the blog! Usually read it on google reader, but officially came out of creeperville today to tell you that you are awesome. 2. Totally in for false lash feb! I am heading into some not so fun midterms and can't commit to anything besides a lot of carbs, but can't wait to see you rock them! xo Alyssa

  22. Aye! Or is it, Eye?! I LOVE false lashes!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I really hope you weren't joking, because I seriously am in love with falsies. Seriously, even when they seem like they should be abnormally long and everyone will be like why are you growing full-length hair from your eyeballs, they just make you look glamorous. I used to use the kind where you glue the lashes on individually and they looked completely natural, even with your eyes closed.

And also, and I know you got bored 40 words ago, I've been reading from google reader for the last while and I just saw the antlers and they are suuuuuuuuper cute. Like. seriously. I am so annoying right now.

But you are awesome. There are going to be some hot ladies in the month of february!

  24. I'm in!!!! I want extensions but scared of the upkeep and damage it could do to my real lashes. Also love the gellac! Unfortunately too much for me because after doing it a few times my real nails are still very week and bend back constantly:( Im going to get to rite aid and buy me some lashes tomorrow! It's going to be FUN!

    ReplyDelete
  25. I'm in! First I have to learn how to put them on... any tips of best place to buy them? On the cheap?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I usually wear them when I'm really want to look super sassy on a date night with the boy.. or if my work is having a certain event that I need to dress for.. but wearing them everyday sounds fab! It's my birthday month as well, so perfect month to feel sassy all month long!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ohh, this made me laugh, mostly because I apply just as much mascara as you.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think I should give this a go as my mascara is not cutting the mustard at the moment and i am very lazy and don't take it off properly--so win win!

    ReplyDelete
  29. In the spirit of False Lash February...I think I will just go get some extensions professionally applied. I was just born with some sort of eye make up application deficiency. I think this would be pushing my limited skills too far. I like the idea though.

    ReplyDelete
  30. i'm in. i've never tried fake eye lashes but what the heck...if it means i can apply less makeup...i'll do it. you look really great with them by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Do they make false eyelashes in colors other than black. Being a redhead with very pale lashes, black is way too harsh on me. I wear brown mascara ... and I would totally join in the false eyelash challenge if they made brown ones!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've always wanted to try false lashes! You've now given me the inspiration to do it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i will admit, when we met at BBB i was very impressed by your lashes :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. with you!!! I think I shall go and pick myself up a pair tonight!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I might just have to try this. I normally do a cat eye every day and a million coats of mascara but this could replace both!!! So exciting. Thank you for being daring so the rest of us might branch out too.
    Xoxo,

  36. I have never worn fake lashes in my life, but I'm so in! Question: my natural lashes are as blonde as they come, so do I need to wear mascara with them? Hmm...

    ReplyDelete
  37. Nat, I've been reading your blog for a while but I don't think I've ever commented! Crazy, I know! But a couple of years ago, all my eyelashed fell out, yes all of them and I wore falsies for a year and loved it! You've inspired me to start wearing them again!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Where in Utah did you get your nails done? I got gel nails a while ago and they only lasted 3 days. I would've loved 2 weeks!

    ReplyDelete
  39. OK I LOVE YOU!! I apply three different kinds of masacara and I do it in a span of an hour put some on, play with the kids, put some on, make kids a snack etc. No one understands....but I guess you do!!!! I want some of those eyelashes I will have to see if I can find that brand :)

  42. I was just pricing eye lash extensions and that's a no. I might be down for this.

    ReplyDelete
  43. You look fab in those lashes! You know I tried to wear some of the little ones at alt and after 20 minutes i could not get them on... ugh! maybe the full lashes are easier to apply?

Also, I wore (and still LOVE) the shellac nails for about 3 months- but once they removed them the last time.. omg, my nails were in terrible shape! Now I only get them for special occasions ;)

Wish we could have met at ALT! But there's always next year, right?

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have a 3 sometimes 4 part mascara system too. I adore falsies, but its more time and effort on girls with light hair and light lashes I feel like, but in the name of science I'm going to try it out!

    ReplyDelete
  45. they look fabulous, but be careful girl, one wrong move and you might accidentally pull your own lashes out with the glue (personal experience) :(

    ReplyDelete
  46. I might have to give this a go! My sister has worn falsies before, but I never have. Btw, are you wearing lip color in this post? If so, what lip color is it? If you don't mind sharing...

    ReplyDelete
  47. AYE AYE! Let's let the experimenting begin!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I've been meaning to try a gel manicure, it just seems to goo to be true that it can really last two weeks without chipping!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I bought a groupon for eye-lash extensions (full set for $50 bones! What?!) but haven't made time to go get them yet. So I will join the challenge of fake eye-lashes for February! Also...I got a gel manicure in the french manicure style...when I started getting the regrowth/grow-out "gap" I just painted the gap with clear nail polish and it made the look last for FOREVER! Good luck with your lashes-sounds like a fun adventure.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Glamazon! I have never heard that before and I love it.

False lash Feb. yes. i've had some irritation around my eyes and this might be just the ticket.

    ReplyDelete
  51. @natasha--i'm not wearing any, but thank you!

@tiffany--i have done this, but with a lash curler! and it was AWFUL.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Great idea to wear waterproof mascara on the bottom lashes. Despite its awesome stay-put advantages, I hate to wear it daily because it's so hard to take off at night, but waterproof only on the bottom might not be so bad. And then it would hopefully prevent against the awful undereye smudging that plagues me. Have fun with your falsies!

    ReplyDelete
  53. How hard was it for you to put them on? I can never seem to get them on straight! How long did it take to put them on?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Lovely idea! I love false lashes, they make that drooped lip, eyelash flutter just that much more appealing. I always get what I want when I'm rockin' the fakes.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was just talking about this very thing with one of my cancer clients the other day. She highly recommended MAC lashes. As she's going through chemo treatments she has no lashes, and said these were the easiest to put on, and stayed put. I'm in too!! :D I love your blog Natalie! You make my day!

    ReplyDelete
  56. never ever tried them! but I do want to. I'm chicken!

    ReplyDelete
  57. Ooh la la! Falsies are the best. Eyelashes that is. Not boobies. But then again, I hear the boobies aren't so bad! Especially after three children.;) However, I need to work on the application. Of eyelashes that is.

    Happy glamifying!

    ReplyDelete
  58. You are a genius! Aye! Aye!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Aye! My mother has worn them every day of my life and I don't know why I haven't yet... since I inherited her genes! (You know. Eyes that need fake lashes.)

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hilarious. I had my first lash experience recently. Where have they been all my life?!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I can honestly tell you I have never considered false eyelashes, until today. But I'm a little timid. Won't the people I see EVERYDAY give me weird looks? And how many times can you wear them? And are they self explanatory about putting them on? Obviously I'm a bit scared.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Sounds lovely, but this plain jane only puts on one quick layer of mascara, so fake lashes would probably seem like a huge chore to me. HOWEVER, I think I'll get some for my next date night with the hubs...

    ReplyDelete
  63. I don't even wear mascara- just eyeliner. I wear glasses so I don't see the point. And it's too dry here for me to wear contacts. Maybe I will give the mascara a try though- that's even daunting to me, but this is a good reminder to be a little more girly like I used to be. xo

    ReplyDelete
  64. Love it!! I have been planning to try falsies for ages, and just never got around to it. Please continue to keep up posted on the best brands, which look the most realistic, stay on well, are comfortable, cheap etc!

I'm so excited, oh ma gawd!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Thank you!! I LOVE false lashes, but so many people think they're weird/Kim Kardashian-ish if you wear them everyday. I so want to do this though!

    ReplyDelete
  66. We are SO on the same wavelength, but I need to borrow a boost of your confidence. I actually ALREADY BOUGHT falsies a few weeks ago. I wore them for an hour before my hubs and my brother both told me they couldn't talk to me while I was wearing them- it was too distracting!

Tell me, tell me- how do I get the full pair to look natural? I want the falsies without the crazies. I teach High School English and my kids would TOTALLY call me on it if it's weird! :) I agree with someone above- tutorial time!

    ReplyDelete
  67. false lashes are awsome! I agree with you! I love it because its easy to apply(once you get used to it)and easy to remove! and it looks great! It doesn't look so great once my little boy slaps me in the face...haha. I always have the lash glue with me!

    ReplyDelete
  68. This is totally a weird question...but does the glue have any unfavorable affects after daily use? Just curious. Cause I'm seriously loving the idea of fabulous lashes everyday!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Okay, so I've been wanting to try out one of those shellac manicures, and I think you just tipped the scale... I mean no chips after 2 weeks! Incredible. And how cute are you in those false lashes? Well, cute in a sexy screen siren a la Marilyn Monroe or Natalie Woods kind of way. :) Also, so great meeting you at Alt! I think I said that already, but there you go. I'd love to meet up when we're in NYC for the Stationery Show in May. KIT.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Never tried falsies but I am IN.

As for the no-chip manicure, I have tried several different brands and had great success with all. I've even gone almost 4 weeks without chips! Albeit the nail bed growth was a site for sore eyes but oh man did the tips of my fingers still look great! I especially loved it for summer vacations when I was active and at the beach. Absolutely worth the money.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Chiming in to say, trim, trim, trim for more realistic looking falsies. Nail scissors or sewing scissors work best, just a few nips especially on the outside edge (seriously, NO eyelashes look that uniform). I never liked cutting the whole lash in half, I found it poked my eyelid occasionally, making me frantically dash to the bathroom in fear that it was falling off (gah, worst make-up gaffe ever!)

    ReplyDelete
  72. yes! I have been wondering the same thing! but then, there was this cheerleader I knew who wore them everyday and you could totally tell, you know? So I wasn't sure.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Aye!
I'm going to be brave and give it a go.

    ReplyDelete
  74. i'm a loooong-time fake eyelash endorser/wearer and, as far as i know, no one has ever called me a tramp. therefore, i say yay to this project!

    ReplyDelete
  75. aye, aye captain. Also, the talk around here is all about latisse so that might be my next experiment.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Just discovered your blog. Pretty fun! I have to say I love the look of falsies but I have special needs applying them. I end up looking like whatever happened to baby jane? Can we get a tutorial?

    ReplyDelete
  77. I love love this idea, but I'm just awful at applying them! How do you do it so effortlessly?

  78. You should get lash extensions instead. A bunch of my friends have them and there are days when they won't wear any make-up at all and you don't even notice because their lashes looks so fab!

    ReplyDelete
  79. i am totally down with false lash feb! count me in!!

    ReplyDelete
  80. it takes me forev to put on mascara, too. you can't rush perfect eyelashes! and i am totally pro-falsies... but if you want to spend the $$ you can get eyelash extensions and they last a while! i mean, i've only witnessed.

    ReplyDelete
  81. I an totally doing this... perhaps a few days late but no time like the present to start!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I cut my falsies in half to cut down on the fakeness and then i double my money!

    ReplyDelete
  83. I am out of town until Sunday...but I am totally buying some false lashes when I get back. I am thinking The Hubs will totally disapprove, but oh well.

Funny that you talk about your system because I have a similar one. With several types of mascara. Crazy!

    ReplyDelete
  84. OH my goodness, gorgeous! I am SO trying this. And knowing me, they will SO fall off as I am sweating in front of the judge, and they will either a. dangle precariously from my upper lid, b. soundlessly fall onto my lapel where I will be the only one who does not notice them there, or c. fall onto a motion and stick there, never to be unstuck, only to be handed in as a little extra treat to the kind opposing counsel, who would never dream of mocking me mercilessly as being that person who handed them a false eyelash with my work.

(In other news, someone turned me loose with coffee and an internet connection today. Sorry for the long comment ramble!)

  85. love the zebra shirt, is that one of your F21 scores?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I want to start off by saying that I paid the big $$$ to get the eyelash extensions done and EVERYBODY commented on how wonderful they looked-they were surprised when I told them they weren't actually mine, but extensions. I have no qualms about this. I paid for them, so they kinda are mine. ;)
However, once they start to fall out-there is a HUGE difference in the way they look. Aside from the pricey fillers, you all should know that having extensions put on your lashes means you must never sleep face down on your pillow again. Seriously. You learn to sleep face-up.
So, yes, they are beautiful at first...but look like spider legs if you don't re-fill.
Oh, and if you decide to remove them, because you conclude you had fun while it lasted but don't want to continue to pay for fills, beware: your REAL lashes will be coming out with the fakes-it is impossible to avoid this. Not all of them come out, just enough that when the fakies have been removed, you are left with eyeballs wishing you had never started this silly process to begin with. :(
Which leads me to state that I think the fake lashes-non-permanent type, you know, the kind you put on yourself, or the kind you get at the MAC store are perfect. xoxoxo
