greetings from chinatown, new york

my mother and i have done nyc together many, many times. on my fifteenth birthday, for my high school graduation, when the holbsaccountant was here training for a new job and i needed someone to paint the town red with, when i had to find an apartment in under 36 hours, and that one time when i had a baby. my mom and i are a well-oiled city machine.

sometimes i think we will run out of things to do here. we've done pretty much all of it.

we decided to take huck grocery shopping in chinatown today. grocery shopping in chinatown is fantastic. and a little gross if you're not used to it. we lived in korea for a bit when i was a kid, so i should be used to it. (but i do still enjoy a quick little "ew!" moment when i first see those chicken feet.)

:: chinatown says hello! ::

afterward we had some amazing korean food for lunch at jup she

we texted my dad a picure of our lunch, to which he responded, "mashi isumnida!"

that means"yummy."
heck if i know these things.

thanks, chinatown!

p.s.
you seasoned mothers
(and all those in the know)
i need your eyeballs on this post at babble.
for the love of my beauty rest!

  2. To be honest the pictures of the pigs feet and chicken feet sort of made me want to never eat again. But then you added a cute picture of you, huck, and your mother, so i'm back to normal now. thank you.

  3. So when you said shopping in Chinatown is fantastically gross, I was like, "Whaaat? Did she mean that?" Then I thought about it: my brother also served his mission in Korea, and even though it ain't China, it's totally Asian, and so is China, and I remembered pictures Vance sent of dismembered animals in the market, and I thought, "Ooooooh. She DID mean fantastically gross."

Then I looked at your pictures, and was like, "Oooooh. Fantastically gross is such a stellar expression for those pictures." I'm trying not to think of the smells that likely accompany the real-life experience. (Good choice, huh?)

Hey, thanks again for sending that link of what to do in NYC; so excited for my trip there!

  4. Yuk! My nose and tummy might not have lasted long enough to take all those pictures. Kudos to you! and your blog is "mashi isumnida" if that can be used synonomously with suh-weet! I think it can. Don't let your holbs get to you.

  5. Just tonight at work one of my Chinese co-workers "threatened" to take me grocery shopping at her fave Asian store, I told her no. Emphatically NO. Then came home to eat my supper. But now that's ruined too. ugh.

Tonight better NOT be one of the recurring dreams I have about you and this blog!!!!!

  12. Funny that, my husband said my blog needed MORE pictures, it was boring because there was too much writing. Perhaps we should swap husbandos?!!

PS, I don't think people can get bored with pictures of NYC, especially if, like me, they have never visited the place.

Please keep posting photos! Thank you!

  13. I think that people like coming to this blog because it is an escapist fantasy of what it would be like to think about pink ponies and hair twirling all day, so I think probably keep doing that because it seems to be working! Seriously though. Also everyone loves pictures.

  14. I think husbands are just destined to tell wives that their blogs are boring. It's not boring. I love the pictures. I especially love that last picture...you look so much like your mom!

  15. I once accidently bought a beautiful hand bag in Chinatown. I didn't realize that I was bargaining the price down and then agreeing to buy it. It's a whole different world there :) Needless to say, it did become my favorite handbag!

  16. I love chinatown nyc so much. I didn't capitalize or overpuncuate that or bold and italicize because I mean it so much that I have to say it like a death threat. quiet, calm, head low. got it?

Also, that picture of you and your mom and huck is so cute! I want to be friends so that I can come to NY...oh, and because you seem entertaining enough :)

  22. You know how children are sometimes unknowingly mean to each other when they see someone about to eat something that is completely foreign to them and they say "eww, gross!" when obviously the food is not gross to the person about to partake of it? Well, your post totally reminded me of that. So much for embracing differences.

  23. Yes, it sounds like you and many of your commenters have something in common with Alexandra Wallace.

  24. Sooooo jealous of the Korean food. My dad was in the army for 22 years and ended up being stationed in Korea three different times for a total of 7 years. Korean food is our (my family) favorite food, we even make it for holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas! Unfortunately, we are currently in Missouri and believe it or not the best Korean place we can find is almost 4 hours away in Springfield! Dad purposely got a specialist doctor down there so we HAVE to go for his specialty check-ups every three months or so. So of course when we go we pig out on Korean for dinner and then have it again for lunch the next day before heading home. His next visit is next weekend! This post just makes me yearn for next Friday to hurry up and get here that much quicker!
