HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR

the other day it was hot. real hot.

it was the first day in a lot of days that i didn't have a meeting to attend, or articles due, or laundry to fold, and it was hot. the park was a no-go. seriously it was like 95 degrees outside, that's no exaggeration (who, me?).

so this is what you do when it is the hottest day of the year outside
and you haven't got much else going on.

step one (1): crank the a/c up super high
snuggle up to watch some robin hood.

step two (2): go to the american museum of natural history where it's air conditioned
see the dinosaurs on the fourth floor

step three (3): spend all your mr. softee money on museum admissions
(and a highly unsatisfactory bag of museum trail mix)
and instead demolish the extra long twizzlers you bought at the fao schwarz
when you get home.

good job! i think i've earned myself another diet coke. huzzah!

  1. Haha, this was awesome! I've been a long time follower, first time poster, and I can soooo relate to step 3.
"step three (3): decide to go to the american museum of natural history to see the dinosaurs on the fourth floor, in order to shake off baby jitters and/or avoid committing any unnecessary online shopping sins (dangerous byproduct of excessive air conditioning inhalation and/or time spent in overly cramped quarters)."

Ok, I live in Florida and I SWEAR it makes me online shop more! No kidding!

  3. True story - at the Museum of Natural History and the Met, the admission fees are just suggested donations. I usually just give a quarter when I go to the Met ;-). But then I do always feel bad...I always tell myself that one day when I'm not a poor student anymore I'll give them lots of money. Also Huck is freakin' adorable as always.

  4. @claire--i donated my last two bucks. :( and i think a mr. softee is actually something stupid like five bucks these days! (ok, 3.50)

  8. i would love to spend the day on the couch with a/c watching robin hood.

instead i spend my days in an a/c-less europe, sweating my life away with no robin hood dvds to be found!

but i do have less than 10 cents in my wallet so we have that in common. ;)

  14. Whoa, whoa, whoa! How much are you paying to enter the Natural History Museum? Please tell me it's not more than $1, and Mr. Softee is definitely more than $1. Which is why I get the Mexican snow cones instead.

  15. Your blog is adorable! I recently discovered it. Your style is so fun and carefree, without sacrificing any intelligence in the writing. Thanks for writing it!

  16. Great writing. Love reading your blog. Love reading about your life.

I'm guessing "anonymous" is just jealous because you have boobs. I think the rest of are all grown up enough to handle some tame cleavage shots. If you got 'em, flaunt 'em - well at least a little. From one mom to another -you just never know how long they'll stay around!

Nat, I love your blog. I love your boobs*! Ignore mean anonymous commenters. No one is making them read so clearly they have nothing better to do than give unsolicited advice to someone they don't know.

Vive la Boobs! Vive la Huck! Vive la photo heavy posts!

(*Ok, I guess I don't really have an opinion on your boobs. Other than, "who cares!")

  19. Dang it. You removed all the nasty comments before i got to read them. I did nothing today and was looking forward to some drama to make my day. Nothing to see here. Except for some boobs. I guess I'll move on......

I'm ALL for boobs by the way. You can never go wrong with a great boob shot. Especially if it has a ginormous twizzler in it.

  20. hi guys! i removed a couple of the anonymous comments that had no names attached regarding my boobs in the middle of the night the other day while not thinking in a horribly awake manner. honestly, we're at a point here, aren't we? i value all your thoughts, but i also know what a spectacle a comments section full of anonymous comments can become. i'd like to not encourage readers to get in arguments in here. um, what else . . . yes i will write more soon i hear you i hear you. let me just say, without trying to be pathetic, that the last couple of weeks have been rough for the holbrooks. i really appreciate you all and hope you feel the love. hugs and kisses and PLEASE use your email addresses when you comment here so i can write to you personally. thanks dudes!

Nat, they were removed in the middle of the day yesterday. Your twitter proves it. Funny, you seem to keep all your positive anonymous comments. So, yes, maybe your readers were 'arguing,' but hey at least they were showing an interest in your blog and you. I can't tell you how many times i've read a post where a reader asked you a question and you never answered. Or better yet, you asked a question on your blog and then made fun of your readers answers on twitter! I only hope you start showing your readers more respect in the future. So, please start writing again and please be the Rat we all feel in love with.

  22. yikes.

anonymous - i try to answer questions via email when i can, which is why i do request again that you attach your email address to your comments. and a name perhaps? if you think you can stand the heat?

and you're right, that is fishy--to clarify, it was an email received in the middle of the night while nursing that made me decide to delete them all, so that was the middle of the night part. these days a lot of parts of the day feel like the middle of the night to me. and i left a critiquing "anonymous' signed by "mellissa" because that is a name, and i respect that.

lastly, comments that are meant as "constructive" can still be hurtful and frustrating, and i am only human. if i tweeted abrasively in response, i apologize.

please do consider signing your name. i put an awful lot of myself out here every day, only to be criticized by hidden readers. if you don't see the ridiculousness in that, well then, i'm stumped.

    thanks friends!
