SICK DAY

in all the world there is nothing worse than a sad, sick baby.

huck woke up in the middle of the night with a fevered forehead and tender legs from yesterday's booster shots. so we spent the day in our pajamas, taking lots of tylenol and ignoring the dishes. snuggles on the couch, and lots (and lots) (and lots) of pooh bear on the tv before sunrise. huck took twenty minute naps that left him grouchier than before he started. i never brushed my hair, and daddy texted from work to see how we were doing and i responded with long strings of the f word.

(one of these days i'll learn to go to bed before 1AM so surprise 3AM wake up calls won't hurt so much.)

tonight before bed we took a warm shower together, his sad tired head on my shoulder, while i rubbed his back and sang every karen carpenter song i know. between sad sighs huck suddenly perked up a bit and waved at the shower curtain. i imagined he was waving to his angels, who had stopped by to make sure he was okay, and that i was doing my job.

don't worry, guys. i'm on this. snuggling babies just happens to be my specialty.

  1. this is very cute. and it is SO SAD when they are sick, but it's the only time my Gigi will actually cuddle with me, so I kind of love it. we have a very similar pooh bear! I wish Gigi and Huck could be besties.

  3. Aww what a sweet post! Especially since my little guy was sick with the fever all last week, I can completely relate to this. I also loved getting to see some snippets of the new apartment, please do a house tour soon. :)

  6. he's starting to look more like a kid and less like a baby. and i think sick baby syndrome is going around. both my nephews spent the day similarly.

  8. This is sad but inlove when my 7 year old twins got sick. Luckily it was never serious. But we'd have Disney parties in my bed and our favorite thing is "Sick Baby Drunk Games!". My hubs is a doctor so he's always on me about dehydration. So we have a game that when we watch a movie say "Peter Pan" for instance, whenever someone says "Neverland" or "pixie dust" you have to take a drink of your Gatorade. I know you don't do sippie cups and I didn't either but keeping a couple playtex insulated sippie cups make hydrating on sick days so much more doable. We have no rules on sick days, naps happen whenever, bedtimes whenever, food whatever they feel like. It's the only time they get Gatorade or 7th, Popsicles And sorbet. It's like a little party. We snuggle and tickle backs and tell each other why we love each other (3 reasons each) and play I Spy. All things you have to look forward to!!! It's so great. Sad for them but great for loving feelings and snuggle time. I loved your post, it was so cute. Love that baby of yours!

  9. Sick days are no fun! We are having our own over this way and I have dealt with more poo than I though possible. Not. cool. Maybe the little guy's a bit off being in a strange new place too? Hope he feels better soon! Your new place looks georgeous btw... can't wait until for a post on it! :)

  12. Regarding your Halloween post (I should go click on it and comment there but I am feeling EXCEPTIONALLY lazy right now) I feel the need to fly to New York with my two year old (who I will disguise as a one year old) so that we can traipse (TRAIPSE, MIND YOU) around New York with you doing photogenic and cool New York type things.

But instead I will probably just sit here on my couch and then later maybe head down to Smiths in my SUV. Mayhaps I'll go a bit crazy and stop at the gas station for a Powerade Zero. (I like to spice it up a little on Wednesday nights.)

You should totally BE JEALOUS OF ME. IT'S A GLAMOROUS LIFE, Nat.

    Kisses for your Huck.

  14. Aww....I hate that. Claire had a day like that last Thursday. Same reason..shots. Nothing like snuggling my 18 mo. old all day. Loved holding her, but damn she is heavy!

Hope all is getting better soon for both of you.

  15. We had a sick day here, too. If only kisses cured fevers! The saddest thing is seeing the baby try to play with his new helium balloon and just finding himself toooooo tired. We played with the curtains for hours instead. And co-napped like crazy. Take that, fever! Here's to livelier tomorrows.

  17. Ugh, I feel your pain--my baby is sick, too. It's in these times we really learn that being a parent is being a servant, am I right?

  18. It is so sad when a baby is sick. But I think I have found something that tears at my heart almost as much - my high school senior son moping around the house because I am going back to work full time next week and he will miss me when he has to come home to an empty house every day.

    He told me so.

    :(

  27. Sick days SUUUUUCCCKKKK. Most especially when Mommy is sick, too (like us today chez Taylor). I myself have spent HOURS singing in the shower with a small person on my lap (Camryn and croup are the most intimate of friends every winter). It all makes me feel very, very young and inexperienced and unhelpful and sad that I can't just take ti all away!

  28. Ohhhhh. I have a sick baby too, only she's 5 and too big to snuggle in the shower.

    It's heartbreaking.
