TO DO IN NEW YORK: MARATHON WEEKEND

over the weekend was the new york marathon, and yeah, the new york marathon is pretty amazing. last year we watched as runners crossed the finish line in the park across from our apartment, and oh good gravy was it an emotional afternoon. (granted, i had just had a baby and so everything that month was just so beautiful! that i was basically tearing up at every tiny thing.)

BUT EVEN BETTER THAN THE NEW YORK MARATHON is this:

last weekend as i was out getting groceries, you know, saving lives, i happened upon a finish line set up outside the 59th street subway exit. big orange balloon arch, people ringing cowbells and cheering, dave matthews band playing loudly on the stereo (what is it with dave matthews band and marathons?) the whole thing. the best part: every person who exited the subway and had to walk through the finish line to get to where they were going totally went for it.  raised their arms in the air and sprinted through and high-fived and claimed their medal proudly. even stuffy looking guys in business suits. it was goofy.

aaaaaand it made me cry. (what is that about?)

happy marathon weekend and congrats all you runners! now please go ice your ankles.

  2. my old roommate used to cry at every marathon she watched (and she watched a lot bc her sister is a big marathoner). usually i am the one crying bc i am in a race, but more because of pain and not inspiration. although i did go running last weekend and ran by a HUGE group of people running/walking to end alzheimers and i was just crying and clapping for them while i was running. running really messes with everyone's emotions.

  8. love it! wish we'd been over on the west side instead of across the park (though the view there was pretty sweet, too, just no fun balloons... live band during the race, though, which i'm sure meeka would've loved if, ya know, she'd been able to keep her eyes open to actually SEE any of her first marathon!)

  9. I totally understand the crying. I cried at everything when I was in Paris, and I cry every time I fly home to see my parents and we drive past the Portland waterfront. When you love a city, you cry when you see it at its most city-est. Yes, I know that's not a word. One evening my roommate and I turned the corner into a little alleyway in Paris, all strung with cafe lights and cozy from the glow of lit shop windows. And someone in the alley was playing "La Vie En Rose" on their guitar. We grabbed each other's hands and BAWLED. I'm sure the same thing happens to Portlanders who eat at Voo Doo Donuts.

  10. haha, this is hilarious. i've never commented until now... love you, love huck (i have a henry baby, too, who just turned one, too, yessiree). so, ever since ever, i've cried at everything! just, happy life moments. i cry when the kids walk home from school to their mamas waiting, i cry when i see an old person at the store smiling at my baby, i cry when my son tugs at my pant legs. i can't decide if it's goofy, or wonderful, so i'm going with wonderful! i love crying. it feels so good!

  11. Something like this happened to me last summer. I live in Portland, OR and every year there is a crazy hard core bike race called Seattle to Portland, in which people ride their bikes 200 miles in one or two days. My husband and I were riding our bikes to see a movie, (about 1.5 miles) and we happened upon the end of the race. Not only did we ride the last few blocks with the cyclists, but these were the racers that made it in really really crazy good time. People were high fiving us as we rode by and I totally took all my praise. I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt and didn't look very tired, obviously. It was one of my favorite things that happened to me this past year. I felt really good about riding my bike that 1.5 miles. :)
